Hi All

Has anyone got any advice or tips on how to treat a sore mouth which is a side effect of my husbands Cancer treatment. He is on immunotherapy and Axitinib, not sure which of these is giving him the sore mouth. He can’t stand hot food or drinks, anything even mildly spicy. His tongue, gums and inside of his lips are affected. It’s really getting him down.
Also, general all over itchiness, best creams / lotions for this. Any ideas?

Thank in advance.

    Hello Gigi1973

Axitinib gave me Mucositis. It's not just the mouth is it! Other orifices can be sore too... Caphosol used religiously plus Gelclair an hour before eating helps. I am addicted to Lucozade; shaken til it's flat. My dentist also recommends Benzydamine. He also prescribed a toothpaste with a high fluoride content and it doesn't seem too sore. All I can see on the tube is "Morningside Healthcare". I also have Zendium which is not too aggravating. I use an electric toothbrush and use it on the feather setting. As you don't have the up/down movement, because the rotating brush does all the work, I found that I was able to clean my teeth without hurting my mouth. My doctor prescribed something for my sore nose but, sorry, don't know what but your GP should know. Diprobase kept in the fridge was kind to nether regions! I had to go down to 2mg Axitinib from 5mg. A three day stop altogether saw the Mucositis ff. Hope he's doing well. Best wishes to you both

thank you for responding. He is on Gelclair and Difflam mouthwash now and although it doesn’t take the soreness away completely, it is more tolerable. And yes, sore nose and nether regions too, moist toilet paper a big help.
He has seen a very positive reduction in tumour size in the first 3 months on this treatment so that makes the side effects a bit more bearable.
    Staying positive.

    Best Wishes to you.

    Gigi.

    Hi Gigi

Good to hear that the treatment has been effective - such good news and helps to stay positive!

I thought it was such a big fail to have to stop the pills but it was just a few days and the Mucositis cleared completely, making it easier to keep at bay now but just putting me back to feeling perfectly well. I have been given to understand that the side effects can flare up from time to time and need not necessarily be a permanent feature. I developed palmar-plantar and have to try and keep that at bay too.

I hope the treatment keeps bringing good results.

    Best wishes & take care

Great he's getting some relief to make it more bearable.  . My husband's treatment is 4 wks on 2 wks off,  so far the 2wk break gives his mouth time to recover before it starts all over again . So happy the results are good
