Advice for sore mouth?

Hi All

Has anyone got any advice or tips on how to treat a sore mouth which is a side effect of my husbands Cancer treatment. He is on immunotherapy and Axitinib, not sure which of these is giving him the sore mouth. He can’t stand hot food or drinks, anything even mildly spicy. His tongue, gums and inside of his lips are affected. It’s really getting him down.
Also, general all over itchiness, best creams / lotions for this. Any ideas?

Thank in advance.

    Hello

I was on Avelumab and Axitinib for quite a while. For sore mouth, your husband could ask his medical team for a mouthwash called Caphosol. I never had any full-on side effects but that did sort out my sore mouth very quickly.

For dry, irritating skin, I used (and still do) Vaseline Intensive Care Aloe Soothe for every day use on my stomach and the soles of my feet. That’s available from more or less any supermarket, a green plastic bottle, and has a pleasant scent.

For more heavy duty use, look online for products from Udderly Smooth, who make moisturising creams specifically to combat the side effects of cancer treatments. Imperial Feet foot balm is another that I have used. Both these have 10% urea content.

Just a quick reply, then. I hope this helps. All the very best to you both.

  • Hi Mark

Thanks for responding, hope you are doing well.

I will get him to ask about the Caphasol on Monday when he goes for his next immunotherapy. They told us at the start to get some ordinary non alcohol mouthwash which we have done but the mintiness causes him quite a bit of discomfort even though it’s supposed to be mild flavour.
He doesn’t have any soreness on his palms or soles, just general dry skin and itching all over, particularly in his scalp. I will get some of the Vaseline and see how it goes.

Hi , my husband on sunitinib and has a sensitive mouth . Hes started using kids strawberry toothpaste and a soft toothbrush and has been prescribed a mouthwash but not the one mentioned above , I'm not sure of the name .

I hope the treatment goes well and he can manage the side effects

  • Hello, thank you for your response.

My husband has found it useful to use a soft toothbrush but we haven’t tried the children’s toothpaste yet. Good idea, thank you, we,ll give it a try.

  • Mucosamin for the mouth is very good

  • My Oncologist prescribed me “ BENZYDAMINE” mouthwash that I found very helpful when I suffered from the sore mouth many of us experienced when first on medication. I have since tried all the Listerine flavoured mouthwashes too some of which brought relief. It’s an awful time getting used to this type of medication but many of the common side effects get easier given time.

  • Quick update, he has been given some GelClair sachets today so will give these a go.
