No appetite

Hi all, well after 10 months post RT for tongue and neck cancer I’m still struggling to eat more than a few forkfuls of food. Bread is a no go also most meats except liver. I still have two drinks a day to keep my weight up. It’s so depressing not being able to go out for meals and it’s really getting me down. Is anyone else in the same position after so long?

  • Hi Sue. I’m coming up for 18 months  now and think that it took a year for me to feel hunger. Going away to the USA changed things a lot. I think it was psychological but it did the trick. Also the  sense of hunger changed to what it was before. I can’t explain it. My husband tells me when I need to eat because I get hangry. Certain foods are a no go - chicken being one of them, especially breast which I’ve never been a fan of. I need to try wings. Anything fatty helps. Pork belly , fatty lamb like shephards pie  I’d say I’m about 70% vegetarian.  Fish is completely off the table unless it’s smoked salmon.

I also find buying cooked meals from delis is better than my own cooking  which I’m so bored with. Huel unflavoured powder has been a life saver , as well as Yfoods.  Although I’ve not had any in a while, but I’d don’t leave home without either with me. You can also buy fruit flavoured yoghurts which are high in proteins too and fill a gap. I have those almost daily.  I very carefully monitor  my protein intake because I do a lot of resistance workouts.  If I find my calories are low end of the day I’ll drink a Huel or yoghurt.

Adjusting is key here.  Be prepared that what spoke to you preciously may leave you stone cold now. I used to have ketchup with many foods, now I barely touch it and end up scraping it off my food .

When I bake I have the double the sugar or it’s too bland.

weight has never been a problem. I’d like to shed 5 pounds but I think my workouts are the culprit.

The other day I said to my husband ‘will I ever come right with my eating?’ And his response was ‘you’ve no idea just how far you’ve come ‘. That was so encouraging. Give yourself time. It will come .  Hugs

  • Yes, a year to the day was my last radiotherapy fraction. 35 fractions and chemo. I still have 2 aymes each with 200ml of milk per day. It's the only way I can get enough calories in. I take 2000 calories each day to maintain my weight. Bread is a no go along with pastry, biscuits and definitely chocolate. I do try to eat one meal a day of solid food. Omelette is my usual meal, soup or fish. My portions are small.  It's not improving but I'm getting used to it. X

  • Thanks DesR it’s amazing how long it takes to return to as near normal as possible. Since your USA trip it sounds positive that things have improved. We are going to stay with our son in Australia over Christmas and I’m hoping that my eating improves as yours did. What is odd that like you I’ve gone off of meat although I can eat fish easier. Today we had a family bbq and I just watched everyone eating burgers, sausages, kebabs etc and all I could eat was a few forkfuls of  pasta and tuna with boiled egg! It really doesn’t bother me as I’ve no appetite although the cooking smell does make me envious!

Take care and thanks again for your message x
