Reaction to toothpaste?

Hello

Things were going well 8 months post treatment…but I seem to have hit a buffer in that suddenly my tongue, mouth and gums flared up quite ferociously.  Seriously not comfortable.  I suspected the Duraphat which I had been told both to brush with 3 times a day and use in dental trays and which I understand has form in this area.  I stopped using the stuff ( using some sensodyne which I used to use pre treatment) and a couple of days later things in my mouth are starting to settle. Unfortunately my sense of taste, which was returning nicely has taken a number of steps backwards and I’m almost back to the ‘everything tastes of cardboard’ of the immediate aftermath of treatment.  Sigh!

Is this normal?  Does it take an age to resolve?  Is there any other high fluoride toothpaste I can buy which could replace the Duraphat but which isn’t quite so vicious? Or will it be a case of settling things down and returning to the Duraphat until the next flare up?  Any advice gratefully received.

Liz

  • I use Wrigley's sugar free spearmint.  The small pellets rather than strips.  I had to stop during treatment but now am back on it again.  It is great for getting my saliva going.

  • I am into my 8th month post treatment now. I don’t use Duraphat much anymore just Colgate for sensitive teeth recommended by my hygienist. I get a polish every three months.

I do have a partial denture but can’t find a gum that doesn’t stick to them.

  • Hi when do you recommend hygienist clean. I'm ten weeks post RT but my mouth is still sore and tongue swollen after tongue op and RT. Don't think I could get hygienist clean yet . I had my last dental check up Jan of this year and I'm very good with my oral hygiene. When did you get your first clean after treatment. Thank you

  • I had my last treatment mid January and first dental in March. Hygienist clean in April .  I did not have much swelling or mouth issues. Just sensitive to hot and cold on my teeth

  • I have my first max fax review in three weeks time I will ask the dentist then and hopefully make hygienists apt after that . Thank you

  • I was scheduled for my hygienist same day as dentist but I asked to postpone by a month and as the dentist was happy she didn’t mind the delay
