Fluoride Trays

Hello Again Everyone,

Prior to my radiotherapy, I had a dental assessment done at Dundee Dental Hospital and, after explaining the possible effects of RT, they asked me if I wanted my lower set of teeth removed (top set are dentures) and I declined. I am pleased at this decision as my post-RT inspection indicated that there was no problems.

However, I returned to the dental hospital yesterday to be fitted with a Fluoride Tray and I have just read this article - Caring For Your Teeth after Head and Neck Radiotherapy | Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (hey.nhs.uk) - and I can only think how lucky I've been, compared with what is shown there.

My question is has anyone had any problems with these trays; especially using overnight? I feel that I have enough overnight problems with my dry mouth without trying to keep this contraption in as well.

Thanks Again,
Bob

  • Hi Bob

They are very popular in The States. I asked my dentist about them. He is a young chap with all the up to date knowledge and plenty of CPD with an equally experienced young expanding team of practitioners and he told me that there is no advantage to having a fluoride varnish or to using Duraphat twice daily so I just have the varnish

It does say in your link to use the tray for ten minutes in the day, though

  • Hi Bob

Sorry I have not used fluoride trays so don't know -  but I have read about people using  these on other websites. I thought this is a very informative article about caring for our teeth.  Amongst the other info given I like the fact it has the info to brush teeth using no toothpaste after snacks. (I have done this for some time using my manual soft toothbrush) plus using water to rinse after drinks.  My main cleans I use my electric toothbrush with Duraphat as well as flossing and using interdental toothbrushes. Some people have to eat and drink little and often so it is good to have all these tips to help keep our teeth as healthy as possible.

    Best wishes
