What to eat post radiotherapy

Hi all,

I popped up and introduced myself about 3 weeks into my treatment of 30 RT and 5 chemotherapy for cancer of the right tonsil, tongue base and lymph nodes. I couldn’t be more thankful for all the support I was given on here as it made me see I could get through. I completed my treatment on 29th April. I managed to get to the end without a feeding tube although I was put on a level 3 liquid only diet due to SLT having concerns that food particles were going into my lungs after developing an infection during week 5 of treatment.

I’m now 10 days post radiotherapy and can’t believe how well I am feeling, my mucus has reduced considerably although like lots of you have mentioned I now have the constant dry mouth to content with instead. I have found making homemade ice lollies out of my fortijuices has been a great way to get calories in and keep my mouth moist with the ice at the same time.

My SLT wants me to start introducing foods again now, I’ve managed porridge and soup so far. I tried a crumpet with lots of butter and beans to try to make it soft but struggled with that. I’ve been given lots of ideas of sweet foods to try but I’m not really into sweet things at the moment think living on fruit flavoured fortisips for the last 5 weeks has made me want something savoury.

Has anyone got any ideas of savoury foods I could try to introduce. I know it’s going to take time and I’m happy if I can just get a few spoonfuls down as at least it’s progress in this marathon journey to my new normal.

  • Sorry to hear your having difficulty with chewing and swallowing and having to rely on a soft diet 2 years on but glad to see you’ve found ways to make it work for you.

I like the idea of quiche as something different and also adding vegetables to the soup I wouldn’t have thought of that thank you

  • Thanks Hazel, more great ideas I’ve brought some roasting bags for cooking meat in when I’m ready to make sure it’s as moist as possible and definitely plenty of gravy. I will take it one day at a time try something if it doesn’t work leave it and go back to it in a few weeks time.

  • I am now 18 months since my last sessions and I lost my teeth after my first sessions I found having cheese mash, corned beef hash, scrambled eggs with a few herbs and spices and found fish easy to eat

keep thinking positively it does get better

  • I am now 9 months post radiotherapy and I am still reliant on Ensure Shakes for nutrition. I can manage a small amount of meat but after a couple small portions it just all turns to mush in my mouth and I have to spit it out. I do find that I cam manage Cup-A-Soups very well plus homemade soup that has been mashed.

    Dani,

I haven't really spoken to my support team since January but I have tried a couple of saliva solutions, suggested by my GP; with the most recent being the "Saliveze", suggested by the dental consultant at my recent review, that I mentioned in another post here.

It is quite frustrating not being able to enjoy my food as well as I would like  but, hey-ho.

  • Is it lack of saliva or not being able to swallow?

A bit of both really. The saliva that I am producing is quite thick/heavy and does help to break down the food and this stops me from swallowing.

  • When mine was like that my trick was to take a tiny sip of warm tea with the food. That acted like saliva and often I didn’t need to chase it down with a drink. Eating still leaves me with bits in my mouth I have to flush out.
