  • Hi Sybil and welcome to the club nobody wants to join.  You are most definitely not alone.  On here we are a friendly bunch and no question is too stupid to ask, or to get a good answer.  I am sure you will have lots of questions in the coming weeks and I hope we can make your recovery just a little bit better.  We are all different so lots of experience on here.

I can't answer your direct question as my glossectomy was abandoned for good reason.  Suffice to say I am heading towards 4 years post diagnosis and doing really well.  Hopefully you will be heading the same way.

  • Hi Sybil. There are a few people here in a similar situation and I hope somebody pops on to say hi.
There is a good group called Young Tongues you might look at. There are lots of folk there just like you. They have a very active social media group too

  • good morning Sybil.

Although this is not a place you want to be, it's lovely here, with lots of help and advice from all sorts of people.

I have tongue cancer, right side tongue and floor of mouth, Unfortunately they were not able to operate on mine, so it's just palative care for me.

You'll find quite a few more people on here with the same as you, who will probably be along later.

    Good luck with your recovery

  • Hi Sybil,

Welcome to the group although the circumstances are not ideal.  I had the same surgery at the age of 20 back in 2008 and at that time, I the youngest patient with that diagnosis that they had ever treated. So I definitely understand the loneliness part of it, especially right now at the beginning of your journey.  I went through several emotions, anger, depression, and almost gave up halfway through treatment but my doctor arranged a meeting with another patient that was going through the same thing for the second time and her words of advice have always stayed with me to this day and helped me tremendously.  And you are certainly in the right place, it's incredibly helpful to have support and communication with others that now exactly what you are going through.

The first year is rough, you just have to stay strong and your body is constantly changing so you'll adapt over time and it just becomes a part of you.   Especially at being 20 years old, it took me me a few years to get rid of the insecurity of it all and now I forget about my scars and no longer embarrassed when people ask.  I still have a very mild speech impediment that embarrasses me from time to time but it is what it is.  I'm still here after all this time and it could be alot worse

  • You are amazing to have coped with this at the age of twenty I am 67 and struggling so much for being older and wiser haha I wish you all things good for the future
