Hello,
Si here, 48 years old fit and well otherwise, newly diagnosed with cancer of right tonsil and lymph nodes (T2, N1 possibly T3, N1). No idea what caused it as I don't smoke and only drink in moderation at weekends, I gather HPV is one of the likely causes for tonsil cancer and more easily treatable. I have had an MRI and needle biopsy just awaiting a PET scan this weekend to see if it has gone anywhere else. I don't know whether this is because they suspect it has or just a precaution, but I am very nervous that they will find more bad news. The prognosis from the initial diagnosis was fully treatable and early stage but obviously I have the PET scan to get through and then I can start my journey. Subject to the scan I will be going into surgery at the start of Jul then chemotherapy.
Thanks,
Si
Hi Ronnie - so you also had some of your cancer outside the margins for surgery too by the sounds of it? I assume it was HPV too, sounds like a very similar cancer to mine - think we are the same age too! Thank you for sharing your experience, really appreciate it and certainly helps me come to terms that I can beat this horrible thing.
Yep, HPV+ right tonsil and one affected lymph node. Thankfully it was caught early, my doctor still doesn't believe we actually caught it when we did but I was adamant something was wrong. Shout up if you need anything, also have a look at my blog if it helps.
Hi pleased you’ve come to a decision not ti sell straight away. Act in haste repent in leisure is an old saying. I had 7 affected lymph nodes no surgery as one too near spine to operate. primary in my tonsil but spread tk soft palate as well. HPV Positive. 4 years on I’m still here today walked 28 km in the dark Peak not bad for pushing 65. Treatment s not easy but it’s doable if I can do it so can you. Take the medication as directed and use your peg if you gave one. Otherwise shout out on here we will all help.

Thanks as ever for sharing your experiences Hazel. Hoping to find out something more useful at the oncologist meeting on wednesday than the quick chat I had last week with a stand in for the stand in and a macmillan nurse (as useful as they are). TBH I can't bring myself to read your blog yet - I haven't even read any of the publications I have been given...I think I'll jump in to it all when I see the oncologist as I still have my head in the sand a bit.
Just been the second anniversary of a good mate who died from a brain tumour at the ripe old age of 46, so feeling a bit raw and fragile about my own situation with him in mind as a ridiculously healthy otherwise and wonderful human being who didn't deserve his fate. RIP Zak E.
Hi Just keep in forefront of mind our cancers are eminently curable. I was 61 now 65 As my oncologist said if he was unlucky enough to get cancer HPV oral cancer is what he would want. The treatment s not pleasant but excellent cure rate. Yes Rip Zak there’s always bad news for someone. But when you’re ready get head up out of sand and hold head up high if I can do it anyone can.

Thanks Hazel, you are truly inspirational and a massive help. That's interesting what your oncologist said and these small nuggets of hope are truly priceless, thank you,
We all felt like you those first few weeks like a rabbit caught in the headlights. Fear if the unknown once I met my oncologist he brought a calm to the room and now I see him once a year we chat like old friends. In between he uses my blog and refers patients to me !!! Think I should charge him !! Like he says he knows the science we know the practicality of it.
Let us know how you get in after Wednesday.

I don’t know. Cancer on the top of my left little finger might have been better

Take your list of questions and make sure everything is explained My oncologist told me the cancer would take a year out of my life, he would “fry the back of my throat” but he would cure me. It did and he did.
I’m eternally grateful for his honesty and the compassion his team showed me when I was at my lowest and didn’t believe any of it despite the fact that I knew and believed in the science, being medically qualified.
Six months checks for me now with a visit at Christmas time with presents.
Four more check ups to go and the umbilical will be ceremoniously snipped.
Best of luck for Wednesday.
