Hello

Today I was told I had cancer in my lymph node, and this is head  and neck cancer. I am terrified. I am waiting for a date for a MRI and PET scan, so don’t know what type of cancer I have.

  • Waiting for results, discharge paper said that the I had firm nodules palpable at the base of my left tongue in keeping with the increased uptake on PET scan, other area all appear normal. I am hoping that it means it is in that tonsil, as I don’t totally understand the report x

    Hi Debbie.
it means that what the PET scan highlighted at the base of your tongue the surgeon could see and feel. That would be the bit they biopsied as well as looking at your tonsils. It’s not surprising really as you have little tonsils at the base of your tongue

Its nothing to worry about. If you have radiotherapy that will take care of it

  • I’m going to have to take the painkillers, I thought the soluble paracetamol was going to be enough, 4 days in and the pain is worse. It’s 2am and I’ve had to take pain relief, I couldn’t wait until the morning when I take my other meds. I love this forum , it’s a comfort to read your replies, especially in the early hours when hubby is in bed and I’m sat here with my faithful little cat, feeling sorry for  myself, which is selfish of me. I am lucky to have found this forum, I have lots to be thankful for. My mouth keeps filling with mucus, is this normal and will it stop

  • Hi Debbie. I hope you feel a little better this morning.  The rest will depend on what further treatment if any you need. Hope you find out soon. Meanwhile be selfish. It’s about you anyway so don’t feel guilty. All the best

Others on here have it spot on... treatment isn't easy but highly doable... outcome for this type of cancer is fairly decent...I'm 31 months post chemotherapy and radiotherapy for lymph glands and tonsil cancer...I have now fully recovered and lead a normal life..you can do this

  • Hi Dani and Chaz

Thank you, I’m only 4 days post operation, so can’t expect too much. The advice on here is really helpful. I’m hoping the results show tonsil and then the outcome might be better x

Hi, Juliesss. Would you mind elaborating on the lumps a bit? Location? Size? Length of time present? Smooth or irregular? Hard or soft? Movable or fixed? Thanks in advance.  Hearts️

  • What's worrying you Diggity? There are lots of lymph nodes in the neck and any one of them can be affected by spread from oropharyngeal cancer, though some more commonly than others. They are usually hard

Well, I was just curious if she's talking about lymph nodes or masses and what they were like. I had a routine ultrasound of my neck to check on a thyroid nodule which is minute and apparently nothing to worry about because it hasn't changed over the past few years and they don't even think it needs biopsied. But, they found a weird lymph node up by my left jaw. It's description was worrisome. It's movable but somewhat firm, but some of mine always have been firm like my preauricular nodes. The CT report said "surrounding fat stranding suggests reactive adenopathy", so they thought it was probably related to infection as I had a couple bad teeth on the left side of my mouth that had to come out. Both were infected and long neglected. After the extractions, the left side of my throat felt swollen and kinda hurt when I swallowed. I've had other symptoms, too, all which could be attributed to the bad teeth, and everything's improved except it still feels funny when I swallow. Not as bad, but kinda. I also had small polyps discovered in my esophagus earlier this year, which were benign, but they're wondering about eosinophilic esophagitis, which can give you the feeling that there's something in your throat. So idk, I'm an overthinker and a googler and I'm just so nervous. I'm widowed and still have our last son at home, and I just can't imagine facing cancer right now. My dentist is going to do another panoramic X-ray for me tomorrow. I have another EGD Aug 23. I'm supposed to have another neck ultrasound in Sep, but I might request that to be sooner. Not sure the pano X-ray will show enough of that area around my left ear/throat.

I should add, I know it's normal for your throat to hurt after an extraction. And it has improved. But I'm not sure it should still feel like this, 3 weeks after the extraction.

  • That’s the trouble with Google. It makes you sicker than you are

If you suspect you have throat cancer go to your doctor and request a referral to ENT, From your spelling I presume you are in the USA.
I don’t see what another pano xray will show.
