How long from diagnosis to treatment?

Hi all, newbie joining.

Husband was diagnosed almost a month ago with tongue cancer which has developed  into secondary cancer of both lungs and possible liver.

Can anyone tell me how long from diagnosis to treatment?  Every day is a lost day.

Without treatment we have been  told 6 to 9 months life expectancy and we are totally and utterly devastated  at this shocking prognosis, especially as he had so few symptoms. We are waiting for a result to see if immunotherapy  is an option or just chemotherapy but this is also taking time and becoming frustrating  and stressful.

Also have problem with dentist who cancelled  his appointment  hours before his appointment  and now will not see him until the end of May. Despite knowing his diagnosis and that he needs chemotherapy  soon. He refused to even speak to my husband. I am absolutely  furious at the sheer callousness of this individual.  The Oncolgist. advised  my husband to get any poor teeth sorted.  By the time he is seen  by the dentist and given treatment I fear any chemotherapy  or immunotherapy  will be too late. I will be obviously  be looking for a new dentist with more compassion but not easy where we live.

Will be extremely grateful for any advice or answers.

  • Oh fidget what an awful time for you. The waiting around to get answers is unbearable.

I really can't add much I'm afraid apart from wondering if you have spoken to the hospital to see if their dental department could help you out in the circumstances?? I had my dental x-trays at hospital, not sure what your husband needs but might be worth taking to them?

Sending love, come and talk to us here whenever you need to, sure others will be along soon,

  • Thank you

    Will do x

  • Hi Fidge03, sorry to read you are in this position, as for the dentist, you might have to go to a private dentist, to get things moving on.  Always ask any questions on here you may have, someone will always answer if they can. Sorry i can't give you any more information.   I wish you both the best of luck.

    Regards Ray.

  • Hi fidget oh dear am so sorry you are being treated so badly. My cancer centre referred me to the main dental hospital for check up. Don’t know where you live but your area shoujd have one.  As for times she I was 63 days from first being referred 14 May 2018 first radiotherapy session was 16 July. If hubby not having radiotherapy you should be quicker hopefully as the radiotherapy take 3 weeks or so planning.
many tone you need answers pop on someone will try to help

  • Hi fidget I agree with the others. Hospital should sort his teeth out. Does your husband have a CNS? Contact them straightaway.
It’s a horrible place to be and he needs to be on treatment to buy you both some time. There have been some remarkable results with immunotherapy.

    Best of luck

  • Hi Fidget I would contact the hospital dentist and get them to deal with any extractions. I was quoted some silly price by my dentist to extract bad teeth. I was advised by my consultant to get the hospital dentists to do the work which they did under an hour. I really hope you can get things moving. All the Best Regards Min

  • Hi there

I am in a similar position to you as it is my partner who is having treatment and i have been getting great comfort in reading the advice on here. My partner had treatment for the throat cancer and just found out a couple of months ago that it had spread to lungs and was told that with out treatment he would have around 6 months. He was put on Immunotherapy (Nivolumab) and has had 3 treatment now which he receives every two weeks and we are hoping that this will do something to stop it growing or spreading and if we are lucky then maybe reduce it.

There are others on here with great advice and it is comforting for me to read their stories. I think that it is hard watching someone that you love suffering and in my case i feel useless sometimes. We both have bad days where thinking gets the better of us but they are not usually at the same time so we just try to rally each other through.

The dentist bit was done at the hospital for Colin before radiotherapy started so i think that the hospital is a good shout and shame on your dentist for being so unhelpful.

I think the waiting is the worst bit but i am sure the treatment plan will come together and you will be on the rollercoaster before you know it.

Covid hasnt helped and it is frustrating not being able to see family and friends but light at the end of that tunnel now and we are trying to make plans that work round treatment days and give something to look forward to.

I wish you and your husband the best and i know it is hard but being positive does help. There are so many inspirational people posting on here.

  • Thank you all for your support and advice.

Hubby hopefully starting immunotherapy soon. Paperwork sorted.

Still no reply from dentist despite specialist nurse stepping in as well.

As we so consumed by all the information forgot to ask about hospital dentist but can e mail our nurse to ask.

    Take care all

  • Hi Fidget

So pleased to hear your hubby is able to have immunotherapy.

Definitely ask about the hospital dentist.  Like others, I was seen by the hospital dentist prior to treatment.

    All the best.

  • Wow that's great news. I don't think they use immunotherapy unless the cancer is receptive to it so, brilliant......he stands great chance.

    So pleased  for you
