My husbands chemo radiotherapy starts on the 24th. We  said we would prefer a RIG to NG but we haven’t yet had an appointment through and feel like we have run out of time. How long did you have between RIG fitting and start of treatment?

I will chase up on Monday

  • How long did you have between RIG fitting and start of treatment?

Everybody here seems to be different all of a sudden. One or two weeks average, some only a day or two before. Some folk are having them fitted during treatment which I think is a bit mean.

  • Good evening Rose, my husband had a PEG fitted about 10 days or so prior start of treatment, so it had time to heal and settle,if that makes sense. Like Dani said it seems mean to get it fitted during treatment, but this procedure seems to get decided different from trust to trust.I am glad my hubby had it fitted prior start. All the best for your hubbies journey.  Fellow wife Mel x

  • Thank you both. I’ll ring Monday and if we could get in quickly then we will have a week.

  • Has his medical team not given him any idea about this getting to be done when discussing his treatment plan at all? Just wondering,we got told about having a PEG fitted straight from the beginning, that he would more then likely going to rely on it.

  • PEG for me...2 weeks...takes about a week to settle down after the procedure

  • They just said to choose NG or RIG but we waited till the next meeting to confirm and that was only 2 weeks before start of treatment. The oncologist said she’d sort it but not heard anything (that was Tue)

  • Waiting for any kind of news is nerve racking as it is,at some point on our journey we got very nervous.  Waiting for the next step, especially myself,we were fortunate enough that our medical team was very understanding when my hubby was asking for clarity for my sakes ,if that makes sense, maybe that would be something you could bring up when you talk to your consultant next, just to put your mind at ease ? • Good evening Rose01924, i had mine fitted during my first operation, but i think that's because mine was classed as an aggressive tumour, so everything was done quickly. As Dani said, fitting it during treatment is unfair; it's better to have it done a couple of weeks before the treatment or surgery starts, so it has time to settle in. Definitely give them a gentle reminder and ask for it to be fitted A,S.A.P. Wishing your husband all the best during his treatment and recovery, take care.
