Hi, I am one week into radiotherapy for SCC of left tonsil bed and left neck lymph nodes. Tonight I’ve noticed a very small node on the right hand side of my neck, it feels exactly like my initial symptom was on the other side. I’ve messaged the hospital about it, but obviously I’m really worried about this and just wondered if anybody else had had a similar experience, and if so what was the outcome?

Hi good that they reacted to your email. Now trust the team they do this day in day out .As yiu said the ct scan didn’t show anything 6 weeks ago and now they are aware the oncologist on Monday will be in your case.
lymph nodes also react to infections, and to the radiotherapy which is why most trust don’t do final let ct scan until 16 weeks after treatment finished. Often a hot spot will be there. Keep positive and try not to worry.

2 videos I’ve been involved with raising awareness of HNC and HPV cancers
it said that there was a “mildly avid”node on the right.
Hi
There are degrees of "avidity" it's measured in SUV (Standardised Uptake Volume ) which measures degree of brightness. A high SUV may indicate cancer but it has limitations so let's hope it's just inflammation....fingers crossed
At least they are on it and they won't let it get away

Only just seen your reply! Thanks Hazel. They have booked me in for an ultrasound and biopsy on 25th February, the start of my week 4 of radiotherapy, which won’t be pleasant! I am trying to stay positive but of course it’s a worry until one actually gets results. thank you for your concern,

Thanks Dani only just saw your reply! As it was ‘mildly avid’ I’m trying to be positive, but the fact that it showed up at all originally, and that there is now a lump there, is very worrying.
But I need to focus on what’s going on at the moment, and leave my worry over this until I’ve got through the initial treatment. Just hoping I don’t have to go through all this again!

I was told that the scans in the radiation room don’t show the tumours, only bone, for the purpose of alignmen
Yes that’s right. I’m sure from some of the posts here that people think the tumour is scanned and the target area altered. That’s not true unless you’re getting adaptive RT which is very new on the scene with HNC.
It’s good that they are keeping a close eye on the lump. Fingers crossed. Hugs

At least one of the LINACs at Southampton certainly does a positioning mini CT scan on which they can see the tumour as my oncologist told me that he could see the positive effect the treatment was having and cancelled the last chemo session as not needed. IIRC he actually showed me the scan on his screen. Happy days!
What is LINAC please?
