Us this a thing

  • I’m only having radiation x30

also 3 blasts on shoulder blade

  • It is unlikely that the RT will make you sick.  Pain meds are more in line with the treatment and I guess you may be someone who reacts badly to those and feels sick until they can get the right balance, but again that is unlikely.

Try not to overthink your treatment.  It is all well and good being prepared, but you can consider too many disaster scenarios and get overloaded.

Focus on what is happening right now.  I am not quite sure where you are up to in your treatment pathway but:

    • Get you PEG in and learn how to use it early on
    • Get the mask made
    • Make friends with your RT team they will support and guide you through this
    • Make your bedroom comfortable and possibly get a wedge pillow
    • Think about how you will travel to/from hospital
    • Prepare for the multitude of pain meds - make a chart so you take them at the right time
    • Listen to those who have trodden this path - there is a lot of experience on here and people are really willing to help when needed
    • Recognise that recovery is along haul.  Tiredness will be with you for some time and your weight may fluctuate
    • Remember that HPV+ H&N cancer has a great cure rate
    • Think about the new you in a year's time, when you have learned to manage your body, and all the opportunities this treatment will have given you to live your life to the fullest.

  • Sounds like a lot of meds

    how many we talking

  • Us this a thing

RT didn’t make me nauseous but the morphine did. It wasn’t bad enough to need antisickness. I just felt “icky” at times.
Listen to Peter. His is excellent advice

  • I was in absolutely no pain before treatment.  A little niggle which I put down to previous dissections tightening up - which turned out to be my tumour.  It would not have been enough to drive me to take even paracetamol.  No problems swallowing either.

As I went through treatment I ramped up from no pain meds through paracetamol to oxycodone and long release patches.  You only get what you need to make yourself feel more comfortable.  Talk to your RT team at any time if you are feeling uncomfortable and they will arrange for it to be sorted.

  • I’m n pain every day and hard to swallow

I need to take pain relief before I eat and every 4 hours

    my ear pain is horrendous

  • So I’m guessing it will get worse

    or sane with treatment

  • So I’m guessing it will get worse

My oncologist told me that if there was pain from the tumour pressing on nerves etc the RT would make it better in the first two weeks till pain from treatment kicked in.
