I take roughly 12 tablets a day and have been through the issue of not being able to swallow never mind eating and drinking which I eventually got admitted to hospital for. While I was receiving treatment I was on big tablets and loads of them for pain relief as usual you find out about getting liquid form tablets after the event. I have recently started taking these again and found a perfect pain free way is to break the tablets in two and have with a spoon full of yogurt and you dont even know you are taking them. Regarding eating which nobody likes doing when you are ill and feel terrible. Something I have learned by my own fault and from people here is to view food as like taking your meds as essential. I recently had a big op and struggled at first eating but made a point of eating every meal fully with the soup and desert. Silly as it sounds but if you are not getting the correct fuel into your body you are only going to stop working , Same goes for drinking plenty of water as your not flushing your system and your wee looks the wrong side of wrong colour and little of it . I am saying this and have in fact slowed down my water in take which I need to increase. I found a really good way to consume food is using a blender and making milk shakes which you can throw anything into even cashew nuts , dates the list is endless and much easier and painful to digest than a proper meal . I hope these tips help someone Good Luck . On a side note if you want to recover quicker dont spend all day sitting down or in bed . It really helps to walk a bit everyday . Happy New Year all for 2023
Hi Min
That is such good advice from someone who has been through the mill. Everything you need to know in a nutshell. I found crushing the tablets and taking them with custard or yoghurt really worked if there was not a liquid form. I still have to take my tablets that way as big tablets just don't go down.
Wishing you a happy 2023 and hope that it is a good one for you.

I was lucky, all my meds were in liquid form, it was impossible to swallow tablets. On the next day after my operation meds were changed from tablet to liquid. Couple of weeks later I was starting to swallow tablets. I also found eating started to get better after a few weeks. I hated the taste of ensures but mixed with gold cap milk they became tastier. My best day was when I went from sloppy foods to my first crumpet smothered in butter and cream cheese . Happy New Year to everyone
Hi Min.....
Great info. Food is fuel becomes our mantra. If you can find a way to get it down do it! The tips about the tablets are brill. It's often easier to swallow something with a little bulk like yoghurt than a liquid like water or liquid medication. Take care....

Couldn’t agree more Min! Like Debbie, nearly all my meds were in liquid form throughout treatment and it was a godsend. I had a little tray with my syringes on all pre-loaded with the next dose. It was an important and oddly comforting part of my routine. As for calories, at my worst point when I could only take in liquid food I came across a 1200 calorie milkshake on the www based on Carnation hi-cal Chocolate Breakfast Essentials, Cornish ice cream and peanut butter which helped no end. Sadly, I couldn’t taste it but it slithered down a treat and helped keep my weight steady. Getting outdoors every day too - a real life saver for me.
All the best for 2023 mate
Hi Min
Happy New Year to you too and to those currently in treatment or recovering.
It should be a good one for me as I hopefully will be getting my reconstruction surgery soon. (maybe, who knows when)
Thanks for the tips. However my problem is that I can only drink with a straw so can’t get enough water in to swallow the tablets and so they stick there stubbornly. Doesn’t matter what size they are. Definitely works fine if I put them in yoghurt though so will keep on doing that. Can’t open my mouth very wide so a table spoon won’t fit in but a teaspoon works.
Thankfully I only have to take one tablet a day so it is no problem. We all find ways and means. Thanks for all the great tips.
Best wishes
Lyn
