Dental implants falling out after radiotherapy for neck cancer

Hello everyone

13 weeks after my Radiotherapy I saw a doctor at Oral Surgery. There was some bleeding in my upper right teeth. She has arranged for me  to have treatment from a Hygienist and told me that there was probably bone loss and my dental implants may have to be removed

3 weeks later and with no warning 2 implants fell out--the screws caps and teeth came out without any bleeding or pain

I am due to see a dentist in a week's time but am totally surprised by what happened

Has anyone else experienced this?

Best wishes

Alfredo

  • I have some bone loss around one implant but I’m keeping that at bay with rigorous oral care. Brushing with Duraphat. Flossing and interdental brushes plus brushing before breakfast. No snacking between meals. Sugar only as part of a meal. It’s all you can do

DO NOT let your dentist take out the implants. That’s a job for your hospital

  • Good evening Alfredo, im slightly different because a had lower jaw reconstruction but i waited 18 months for my implants but after about 18 months they started to become loose and in the end they fell out. My consultant said this can happen as the body can reject them thinking its something alien ( bit like an infection ) and starts to fight back, he did say he would try again but i have never taken up his offer, i hope you manage to get some answers. All the best.

Its sometimes not easy but its worth it !

  • Good morning Dani

    Thank you for your reply

The appointment with the dentist is to discuss recementing a bridge and the possibility of having an adhesive bridge in the same quadrant and was recommended by the hospital

I will always follow the hospital's advice

    Best wishes
