Hey guys, long time no see!
Those who remember me probably remember i had a disagreement with my dentist over the need for flouride varnishes (he always insisted i didnt need them when i asked for them)
Well i went to have my check up today and he has told me my teeth are demineralised with lots of enamel gone and that i need a tonne of caps on them, he is quoting thousands and thousands of pounds. I had noticed sensitivity recently when eating harder food.
I simply cannot afford it right now, i have spent thousands recently on unexpected costs, and as a result have a loan and only 1k in the bank right now...with huge fuel bills to come.
I have spent half the day ringing around dentists on the nhs website and nobody wants to take me on as a patient, but you guys know why i cant let my teeth get worse (osteonecrosis risk)
Does anyone know how i can get treatment? i can manage all the nhs fees (which are all under 1k) - i tried calling my gp hoping for a referral to the dental hospital and couldnt even get past the receptionist who was very curt in telling me to go to my dentist.
Thanks
Hi Trev...
Ouch....both for your teeth and your pocket.
I would go back to your hospital armed with your story about your dentist refusing varnishes.
Contact your CNS
Compose an Email to your oncologist and send it to his secretary to forward. You could try direct if you have their address. if you don't they are usually first name.surname@nhs.uk The hospital will have a restorative dentist department. I have one ongoing problem with one tooth that was supposed to be sorted by my hospital just as Covid hit. I have since got forgotten. I had a review a couple of weeks ago and my surgeon got me referred there straight away. Lay it on thick. If you are in danger of losing your teeth they must surely see you.
Good luck

Thanks Dani, i will contact the secretary, i have her email address - i am a bit annoyed to be honest as for the last year and a half i have been asking for flouride varnishes.
It may not have prevented this, but i will never know now!
I am actually due to see my consultant very soon as well.
Thanks again
I finally got an appointment with consultant, 6 weeks overdue (they forgot to book me and i had to chase)
The consultant was running an hour and a half late and whizzed me through in record time, i tried to talk about the caps but he cut me off as he wanted to get on with the scope...i know i should have been more forceful but it is difficult.
Normally i would take a loan and get the caps, but i have had to fork out on all sorts and simply cannot find the money...not sure what to do really :(
not sure what to do really :(
Hell!
Back to square one. Tackle your CNS again and insist
I hate the way some people are just abandoned once the cancer is fixed. Some trusts are awful for this yet others have such wonderful post treatment palliative care. We shouldn’t have to fight like this.

You should be entitled to a proper consultation Trevor, as Dani said each hospital and consultant are different in the aftercare. I remember my consultant saying to me how difficult it was to warrant spending £5000 on a device ( bone distractor) that expanded my jaw bone thickness making it stronger so they could fit dentures, so he said i have another patient who will need it once i had finished with it so im actually saving you money needless to say he got his own way and the NHS trust paid for it. This is just an example of what can be done if your team is on your side and giving you the best treatment. Please don't use your own money you should be entitled to treatment. All the best.
Chris
I thought that restoration was a given for anyone who had gone through cancer treatment.
It is and that’s what we are told at the beginning. It doesn’t happen though. Other pressures on the nhs

Press for a proper assessment, fingers crossed for you
I need some work but it’s not urgent. I have had four appointments cancelled. My lovely Maxfac consultant stepped in and gave restorative dentistry a kick up the proverbial and I got an appointment straightaway which was postponed a week later
