Persistent oral thrush

Hi.
I finished treatment end of April and have had persistent thrush since half way through. I have tried everything for weeks- fluconazole, itraconazole and nystatin. I’ve also been applying Daktarin on my tongue. Nothing works and the gp even asks me which medication to re-issue. I’ve had an oral mouth wash to balance the biome and this helped for a while but not anymore. I think it has now gone down the back of my throat and as disgusting as this sounds, my tongue is furry. I’m now going to eliminate certain foods from my diet which is going to be difficult as I can’t eat much as it is. I’ve also read that probiotics or prebiotics can help. Are there any particular ones that anyone knows of that have helped? I keep scrolling through the reviews to see a mention of thrush but no luck yet.
thanks

  • Clare, it's just struck me. Do you have thrush at all? Is it painful or just white and furry? After all this time I'd insist on a swab to see. It's a simple test. Furry tongue can also be caused by lack of saliva and an upset biome as you mentioned. Try the Bioxtra mouthwash. I get it on prescription. What's your saliva like? Is your mouth moist all the time or are you fighting against dryness most of the time. I had a course  of acupuncture which kick started mine and I chewed xylitol gum too get it flowing all the time. I don't need so much gum now but do keep it handy.

  • Hi Clare, I also had persistent oral thrush after treatment, tried everything but always as soon as I finished any treatment it’d come back again, it drove me mad, eventually after a year I outgrew it and it stopped coming back so you may have to just ride it out I’m afraid. My doctor did recommend drinking an actimel every day and I do think that helped slightly in it not getting sore so quick if that’s any help.

I am 2 years post treatment now and no longer suffer with it so there is light at the end of the tunnel just took me a while to get there

  • Thank you Hazel, yes I was having a lot of sweet things as was beginning to enjoy tasting again but now trying to cut out thanks to your advice x

  • Thank you. Obviously I hope I don’t have it as long as you but it gives me hope that it won’t hang around forever.

  • Brilliant thank you. I’ve just got some optibac every day max.

  • Yes I had a swab done. They’ve now suggested I go in for IV treatment if doesn’t clear soon. Thanks for your advice and support.

  • Hi

My husband had a white furry tongue during his treatment and our Gp treated him for thrush although the ENT team insisted it was just his treatment, the Gp did take a sample and said it came back as "borderline" what ever that meant.

But the reason for my post is when we saw one of  the consultant about 4 months ago he told him to try Soluble vitamin C tablets which he dilutes in a glass of water every morning.

We are not sure but this has appeared to make a big difference the white tongue has almost vanished.
