Persistent oral thrush

Hi.
I finished treatment end of April and have had persistent thrush since half way through. I have tried everything for weeks- fluconazole, itraconazole and nystatin. I’ve also been applying Daktarin on my tongue. Nothing works and the gp even asks me which medication to re-issue. I’ve had an oral mouth wash to balance the biome and this helped for a while but not anymore. I think it has now gone down the back of my throat and as disgusting as this sounds, my tongue is furry. I’m now going to eliminate certain foods from my diet which is going to be difficult as I can’t eat much as it is. I’ve also read that probiotics or prebiotics can help. Are there any particular ones that anyone knows of that have helped? I keep scrolling through the reviews to see a mention of thrush but no luck yet.
thanks

  • Hi Clare

The only think I can think of is to eat live yoghurt and use honey as a sweetener. Not supermarket honey and don’t waste your money in Manuka ( though I suppose you could try it but beekeeper honey is just as good and much cheaper )

Hope you get to the bottom of it.

  • Thanks Dani. I had some before but you’ve reminded me to try it again x

  • Hi Clare the daktarin and nystatin never touched my oral thrush, they are ok for normal oral thrush but ours caused by radiotherapy I was told only work with flucozonole. The daktarin made mine worse as it’s like an orange sugar .what dose  if Flucozole were you in from memory I had m2 weeks worth in one stretch. That cleared it up I didn’t take any other medication apart from  my blood pressure tablet so there wasn’t any interactions. As Dani says only use pure beekeepers honey p, are. You having a lot of sweet puddings ? If so try to substitute with savoury’s or soups nit easy I know I found too much sweet food gave me bud j g tongue as well  Mine did eventually go. Could be worth contacting yiu cancer nurse as I found g p didn’t know enough about my cancer.

  • Hi as we know we are all different you can only try. Remember to brush teeth 30 minutes after eating anything sweet, plus make sweet part if your meal  and try not to snack on them nit easy I know been there and dine it. I got into making my own soups that way youre in control of seasoning I can’t tolerate tinned or packet soups again that’s just me. Eggs became my best friend as well.

  • I’ll get more fluconazole in that case.

Ask your oncologist or CNS rather than your GP. Intermittent use of fluconazole leads to resistance and you have to use two antifungals together

  • Hi. The furry tongue (according to my consultant) is down to the reduced saliva. Brushing your tongue can help (tongue scraper didn't work for me). The reason I ended up diagnosed with an SCC in my neck and all the treatments that ensued, was because I thought I just had oral thrush and the GPs just kept prescribing Fluconazole-to no avail, until 1 GP took a different stance, hence the reason I am here. On the issue of your ongoing thrush, this might help. I had a verruca for 12 years and it all of a sudden dissappeared when I started drinking lactose free milk and taking probiotics. No idea which one helped but, the probiotics I take are Optibacs Every Day. You can get them slightly cheaper from chemists/Waitrose or Chemist Direct. Hope that helps.

  • Hi c Clare. Hi had same problem for months try everything..have you tred Aspirin mouthwash that have helped me alot .good luck Ok hand

  • Hi Clare

I have had problems with oral thrush recently  and have been on the same meds as you (but not the intraconazole) prescribed by my doctors.   It has taken a while with the meds and I am now much improved with this but it has not completely gone away. I am too at looking ways to help me maybe prevent or lesson outbreaks. I have started taking the probiotic yogurt drink to see if this helps me and just see how I go. I use mouthwashes with cooled boiled water with bicarbonate of soda or salt and rinse again with plain water.  I try to keep my mouth hydrated by drinking more or even if I just use plain water as a  quick mouthwash. I know there are some mouthwashes for dry mouths too. I have had a furry tongue in the past and mine was due to dry mouth. Maybe speak to your nurse and ask if you could have something prescribed for this.

I hope this improves for you soon.
