Another lump

Hello everyone,

Long time lurker here but have never actually posted.

My partner was diagnosed with SCC on the Tonsil back in September 24 (HPV positive), T2N2bM0. He underwent tors surgery in November and then because of ECE and low margins in some places he underwent 30 RT and 6 x cisplatin which ended in February.

He has been doing super well with his recovery, but today has noticed a lump appeared along his scar line on his neck which feels quite hard.

Needless to say, we are frantic. He was due to see the ENT for a review next Thursday and we are waiting to hear back from his CNS as I have rung this morning for advice.

Has anyone experienced this before? Could it be scar tissue or swelling perhaps?

Thanks all in advance,

nikki

  • Hi Nikki, welcome to the group. It could well be scar tissue. However you have done the right thing by calling his team, hopefully they will be able to put your minds at rest. We're always here if you need us.

  • Thanks ray, I appreciate your reply. As I am sure you are well aware from your own experiences, the anxiety is awful, especially as we are only a couple of weeks away from the after treatment PET scan and everything has been going well.

They have fit him in this weeks clinic on Thursday so keeping everything crossed Fingers crossed tone1

  • HimNikki  could well be scar tissue. Our type if cancer rarely fails  at the first hurdle. You've done the right thing contacting his cns. Has he started with lymphodema ? Swelling around the neck area ? Did he have a neck dissection as well when you say scar tissue ?

  • Hi hazel,

    many thanks for your reply.

He did have a neck dissection yes with quite a few nodes removed and the lump that came up this morning does seem to follow the scar line.

he has also started with lymphedema yes, he has a pouch under his chin. I am wondering (severely hoping!) that this lump this morning is linked as it has receded a lot since first thing this morning.
it’s just so worrying, especially with his PET scan just around the corner. It felt like we were seeing light at the end of a very dark corner with his recovery and then all of a sudden something happens and makes you feel like you did when you were right at the very start of the journey.

Thanks a lot for your reply - I have been reading each and every post on here since before Christmas and it has helped me stay sane throughout this journey.

  • Hi Nikki glad we’ve helped. Try not to stress there will  bump's lumps coughs on the way.

I’m very very lucky I never stressed not even when in year 2 the scope found a cyst in my  vocal cord. We are going tk Spain the next day. I trusted my consultant she says it’s benign so off  I went. 3 months  later was still there no change presume  it’s still there. If the lumps on his dissection line and hes lymphoedema sounds like it’s linked. But we’re not medics so let the cns get in touch. Even now 7 years later I would still be seen if I had any issues by contacting my cns which is reassuring. Let us know.

  • Thanks Hazel, much appreciated and yes I will do.

i think with previous experiences of cancer within the family (I lost my sister at 38 to bowel cancer) it seems hard to see that everything could turn out ok and that we will get through it all in one piece. The brain automatically goes down the negative road.

My other half isn’t into things like this but it has been so very helpful to me (and to him by proxy as I have managed to pass on lots of info and tips to him). The anxiety has been unreal but being able to keep up with everyone’s experiences on here has helped normalise it all somewhat so thank you.

    thanks,

    Nikki
