Immunotherapy after having Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy

My partner was diagnosed with throat cancer in May 2020. He had Chemotherapy for 6 weeks then chemotherapy and Radiotherapy for another 6 weeks. He had a scan in December and all clear apart from scarring tissue.  He had been feeding through a picc line but stopped using in January and was doing great.  That is until last week we went to get the results of his follow up scan to be told his throat cancer has spread to his lungs.  To say we were shocked was an understatement indeed.

Today he had his first Immunotherapy treatment and we have to wait 3 months for a scan to see if this has worked.

Does anyone have information on how well this treatment works in similar cases.

The Cancer is stage 4 and in both lungs.

  • Hi Hillsider. Sorry you have found yourself here. There have been some very good results with immunotherapy and some forum members are on it. If you type immunotherapy into the search bar at the very top of the page and select the head and neck cancer tab there are some threads to look through. I'll start you off on two. You might be able to connect with folk who have more information by maybe sending a friend request and a private message or simply posting in one of those threads

I hope everything goes well for you both

    Best wishes

  • Hello Hillsider, what a shock for you both to get a recurrence so soon. Great that they are offering the immunotherapy and got it going so quickly.  It will not be a harsh treatment like the radiotherapy and chemo he'll pleased to know. My first scan showed a slight increase in the size of the tumour on my lung and no change to the size in the 2 in my lymph nodes in my chest.  Apparently that is common but was still in the 'stable' levels so treatment could continue.

I got a great result with the 2nd scan- the tumour in the lung had shrunk considerably, almost by half. I'm due another scan soon and I will be on my 9th session.

I appreciate everybody is different but I really hope he responds well to this.

    All the best,

    Fi x

  • Thanks Dani, I didn't realise it was so long since I posted. I'm also in the incurables group so tend to be in there more.

    Hope you're keeping well!

  • Fi Thank you so much for getting back to me. That is wonderful news for you and great for me to hear. We are still trying to  get our head around the news and it is great that they started the treatment so soon. He was really worried about the side effects but the nurse and now you reassured him that it would not be anything like the Chemo and Radiation so that is good to hear.

I wish you all the best for your next scan and i will keep an eye out on here as it is great to read how other people are coping.

    Thank you again.

  • Thank you for your help, i will have a look at the links you suggest.

  • Hi little fi Good to hear from you glad you are keeping ok and immunotherapy doing it s job.
