Hi

  • my dad has mouth cancer which has spread to his neck & he is now terminal. He finds it very hard to eat & has to have everything blended down completely. His dietician has suggested he have tofu. My mum has never cooked this & has no idea what can be done with it. Has anyone got any recipes she could try that would blend down to no lumps at all? Thanks.
  • Hi Juniper. So sorry to hear about your father. I do cook with tofu. It’s fairly tasteless and takes on the taste of what you cook it with. It would take some blending.

The easiest thing in your mums case might be to use tofu as you would meat in a stew or soup then blend the lot down.
Has your father been given replacement drinks such as Ensure or Fortisips? These have everything he needs

Best of luck to your dad xx

Thank you. I will pass that on to my mum. My dad has been given some meal replacement drinks but he’s been told he has to have normal meals on top of the drinks. He’s finding it hard to find things he can stomach now as his mouth is so painful.

  • Oh your poor dad. I can’t see why he is having to eat if he can’t.  is another Community Champion here and he has been PEG fed these supplements for years. Perhaps your mum can ask why your dad can’t do the same?
Im sure Chris will be along later tonight to comment.

  • Hi Juniper74 , as Dani said tofu is very bland and needs cooking sauces to liven it up, if he is struggling with swallowing then i would seriously consider switching to liquid food supplements like Ensure or Fortisips as it takes less effort to swallow rather than normal food, also blended down soup might help. To be honest i would ask for a PEG feeding tube to be fitted so the supplements and meds can be administered by a syringe this will take the discomfort from his mouth as it goes straight into the stomach. I have been using a PEG since 2009 as my swallowing is not very good except for thin liquids like water, tea, coffee, etc, and the occasional beer. If a PEG is fitted he can also be fed via a pump. Failing this maybe an NG tube that goes down the nose and throat but i believe you have to have to be pump-fed. Don't let him suffer from the pain, I'm sure his consultant can arrange a feeding tube to be fitted unless there is a medical reason why one cannot be fitted. Please re-post if you have any more questions or need some reassurance, all the very best to you and your family, take care.

Thanks Chris. I’ll pass this info onto my parents. Much appreciated.

Thank you. I will look at those groups. Xx

  • My dad lived for 20yrs being peg fed seems harsh for yr dad to be in more pain at this very hard time when having liquid food would ease some of his pain so sad Disappointed

  • Absolutely. I can't imagine why a dietician would suggest such a thing. I can only imagine that he/she hasn't actually looked in Juniper's Dad's mouth.

I think that is true & they didn’t look in mouth - I will definitely ask parents to look into this.
Thanks everyone for your support xx
