Since his Laryngectomy my Dad keeps getting a build up of foam and mucus from in his nose and throat. His chest is clear so it is not to do with his airway or lungs. This is causing issues with him eating and drinking and makes him cough quite a lot. Has anyone else had this? What eased it? All the doctors say is "things will take time to settle after the op" which is not help!

Any advice welcome! Thankyou

  • Hi VICZM

I'm afraid I can't offer any advice but there is a brilliant blog that you may like to read by a physician and laryngectomee:

    https://dribrook.blogspot.com/p/mucous-and-airway-care.html

Hopefully you'll be able to get some more information and advice from this as well as from people here.

    Wishing you all the best.

  • Good evening VIZCM, a lot will depend on when he had the operation as it does take quite a while to clear, i cannot understand how its affecting his nose as a laryngectomee we don't breathe through our noses so something is not quite right. I used my PEG feeding tube as i cannot eat so maybe he has started to eat too early causing a build-up, is the food going down ok swallow wise, if not it needs checking out by the use of a video swallow test by his speech and language therapist.

Each laryngectomees recovery is so different it how they recover, swallow, speech, etc, so maybe this is one of the side effects that can occur for certain people and will improve with time, im sorry i cannot help much more as i never suffered what your dad is going through, i hope that you manage to get some answers and your dads condition improves, best wishes, take care.
