Hi everyone,

I have been anxious that I have tonsil cancer for the last few days.

At the end of December and beginning of January I had a throat/tonsil infection with tonsil stones. I didn't have much constant throat pain on a regular basis except the first day I felt ill (but it does still hurt a lot after talking for more than 30 minutes). My gp prescribed antibiotics, and they did not help at all. From then until now, my tonsils are swollen, I have a few white tonsil stones, swollen lymph nodes (a few on neck, a few under jaw right side, one on back of neck towards right side), and when I speak for any longer than about 30 minutes my throat gets very swollen, painful, and it becomes difficult to swallow and breathe well. The right tonsil is definitely much more swollen than the left. Also, two days ago the left side of my mouth has become raw and painful in two small patches that are bright red (unsure if this is connected).

I have tested negative for the coronavirus multiple times, and if it were strep I'm assuming the antibiotics would have helped. Also, there is no reason for me to believe I have mononucleosis, as I have not shared anything that mouths touch with people.

I know that the symptoms for tonsil cancer are a bit vague, so I was wondering if anyone diagnosed had similar symptoms (or if not can suggest anything else I should look into) so I can bring it up at the gp again this week. Unfortunately my symptoms are lining up with tonsil cancer. I am not freaking out about it though, as no doctors have confirmed anything, but I don't want to leave the gp feeling as though my concerns were not heard.

Thank you in advance

  • Hi none of on here can offer you a diagnosis . I am 30 month post treatment for tonsil cancer with several affected lymph nodes. I had no symptoms apart  from a lump in my coller bone. You don’t say how old you are ? Tonsil cancer is a relatively rare cancer. I had no swollen tonsils sore throats. Can I ask you to refrain from going on dr google if you’ve been online. Stick with your g p if not happy ask fir a referral to e n t but please don’t presume tonsil cancer. There are many other things that can present .

  • Hello. I agree with Hazels comments. 40 years ago I had throat problems and horrendous pain which turned out to be tonsilitis in the end. If I had google then, it would have sent me in a turmoil as to what it was, I had an issue 26 years ago and there was no pain but something didn't feel right with a lump so I just had to keep badgering, 1 GP listened and referred me, turned out to be breast cancer. I've survived. You never can tell.  Use your GP etc until you have an answer. All the best for you.

  • Hi

I did have tonsil cancer, but my symptoms were nothing like yours, i had ONE swollen tonsil (the other was fine) and mild breathing issues from the swelling blocking airways, that was it- no pain, no red patches etc.

It sounds more like tonsillitis to me really.

BUT i am not a doctor, and no-one here can diagnose you. While to me personally it sounds nothing like my tonsil cancer it is always best to get these things checked out by a professional

I hope it turns out to be nothing to worry about, let us know how you get on

  • Hi nervousperson350, if these are new symptoms then you should go back to your GP, this is a difficult period with Coronavirus and flu etc so its hard to say what it could be, i have never had any telltale signs that i had cancer, the normal symptoms are tiredness, lack of appetite and weight loss. This is where Google can be so misleading with the information so please contact your Dr and he/she will send you for further tests if he/she is concerned, please let us know how you get on. All the best, take care.

  • Hi nervousperson

I shall just add my two pennorth
Your symptoms are not typical  of tonsil cancer but if you are worried you should seek medical advice

I see you mention mononucleosis  No lay person calls it that. We all call it Glandular Fever.  I can presume you have picked that up from Google. Could I advise you that it’s best to stay off it as it will lead you down the wrong path, worry you unnecessarily and give you every disease on the planet

    Best wishes

  • Hi nervousperson350

as the others have said, none of us can make a diagnosis and Google is a no no as you can convince yourself you have something you don’t. If you still have problems when the anti biotics have finished keep going back to your gp - if it continues for a length of time, then request a second opinion/referral

  • Hi nervousperson350

I can only agree with everything that's been previously posted.

I had base of tongue cancer and had no symptoms at all other than my voice changed, I had a weird feeling in my throat (not a conventional sore throat) and just felt as though I was going down with an infection.

I did have glandular fever as a teenager which wasn't originally diagnosed.  I managed to pass it on to friends I sat next to at college.

Please go back to your GP.   If you have antibiotics and your symptoms don't improve then I would suggest either a second opinion or ask to be referred to an ENT specialist.

    All the best.
