I completed a 20 session course of radiotherapy for cancer of the larynx on the 21st of April. Since then my biggest problem is a dry mouth and throat at night. Is there anyone who can offer advice to overcome this? Thanks

  • Hi Sparks41

I’ve had this problem too, post treatment. There are rinses and mouthwashes, which are OK by day, but the nights are the worst.

The best thing I can recommend are lozenges called Xylemelt Oracoat, which you lodge on the gum last thing, and they will keep you moist all night long. You can always use them in the day also.

£10 a box for 40 admittedly, but they do work. Available at Boots or online through Amazon.

I wish you all the best in your recovery. It takes time but you will get there. I’m two years in, but gaining strength, and regaining some weight all the time

    My very best - Mark

  • Hello Sparks. It's a big issue for many and still for me six years down the line so I sympathise; personally I've never found anything more effective than water but many people find XyliMelts help. Gargling/rinsing with bicarbonate of soda apparently works for some as well.

Acupuncture can be effective too, I had that and it helped during the day I think but I still had the night issues. Good luck.

  • Ty I get Dry mouth due to NHL making me perspire so much & keeping drink by bed means more more visits to bathroom ty I will order some of Amazon tyvm

  • Xylimelts at night.
sugar free chewing gum is a godsend. I find I don’t even have to chew it, simply park it between my gum and cheek.
Acupuncture definitely helps me and I’m missing it during the lock down. I shall revisit it when we are all back at work.

  • Hi

As well as the Xylimelts you may wish to consider the BioXtra products.

They are PH neutral and are available on prescription. There’s a spray for during the day, a thick gel for during the night and a mouthwash for use throughout the day.

    Good luck!

    Hi Mark,

Thanks for your reply and advice. Sorry about my delay in responding but I've had a problem with accessing the site (all of my own making).

Re the lozenges, they sound like the answer to getting a decent uninterrupted nights sleep. I will certainly order some today and try them.

    Best wishes,

    Allen

    Hello MikeO,

Many thanks for your reply and recommendations, I will be trying the XyliMelts and hope they are the answer to my night time problem.

It's also encouraging to hear that you are 6 years down the line as I don't know anyone who has been through this and your information

    helps lift my spirit higher.

    Best wishes,

    Allen

    Hi Beesuit,

Many thanks for response and recommendation of using the gum without chewing it. Great idea, why didn't I think of that?

I will also look into Acupuncture if the 'home" remedies don't work for me.

    Best wishes,

    Allen

Like others say I swear by xyimelts I use the slightly sweet ones as the mild mint are too minty for me. I use 1/2 one cut with a knife on hard surface.

I also use bioxtra products have done all way through .

i also had acupuncture which worked for me I paid privately for my sessions had 8 in the end .they recommend that you wait 6 months before starting but again that’s up to yiu some start through treatment again individual.

i also use boots dry mouth spray for those odd occasions when I am really dry mouth but again too minty for yiu now

sugar free gum chew it and like Dani says park itbbetween gun n cheek I even break chewing gum in half so last longer.

Water water n more water I haven’t been able to drink tap water  since week 3 so bottled water. Plus keep off tea and coffee unless de caffeinated as they are both drying. .
