So I've just completed my 1st week of chemo and radiotherapy, the sickness side effects are really bad. Has anyone else having trouble with their hearing as a side effect. Thanks
J
Hi Juddles
Sorry you are feeling so sick
It will be the Chemo making you feel this way as RT effects start kicking in around week three.
Have you been given anything to help with the sickness? There are drugs you can take to help with that. How many weeks of RT and how many chemo sessions are you scheduled for?
Cisplatin is the culprit with hearing problems. I never had chemotherapy but plenty of people have and can report varying degrees of hearing interference.
As you are in the department every day you can report all your side effects and the team should do something about it.
Good luck and I hope you feel better soon

I had the 35 RT and 3 chemos and did loose my hearing...it came and went but all good now. I have been left with tinnitus but doesn’t bother me most of the time. I too was very sick but was usually a week after chemo...they gave me various anti sickness meds...got through it by knowing it wouldn’t last for long...
best of wishes x
And as bad as some days will seem time will pass quickly..take every day one day at a time..don’t think about tomorrow or next week...just today and then today will be gone and you are a day closer to the end of treatment...you’ll get through it and come through the other side proud of yourself for doing it!!...we are a strong bunch on here!!...

Hi Beesuit,
Thanks for the support, it was Cisplatin I had, my plan is for 6 weeks RT with chemo in week 1 and week 5, will hopefully better next week. The anti sickness meds stopped the sickness but not the nausea. It the ear blocking that's concerning as it was never mentioned as a side effect.
Hope you are keeping well, best wishes.

Thanks Hazel,
I suppose different side effects affect diffrent people, life would be quite boring if we were all the same, I was concerned as I don't recall ear problems being mentioned as a possible side effectthat said if this would clear I would feel OK which is better than I thought. The anti sickness meds stopped the sickness but not the nausea but seem to be over that now (fingers crossed)
.
Thanks for the support, lots of luck and best wishes

Hi Juddles. Sorry it’s rough at present. I was the same - horrendous sickness & nausea after 1 week. I told the team (who said I should have been admitted, although no one on the end of phone seemed to know this) and they changed my meds slightly for 2nd & 3rd chemos. From prednisone to dexamethasone, I was already on the expensive ones (Acrepitan or something). Much better -no nausea for chemos 2 & 3.
The hearing could be a problem. If due to cisplatin your team must know and might want to change your chemo to cetuximab as further Hearing damage is likely with more cisplatin. However, get them to check (hearing test) - if it’s just a blocked ear then no problem, should be temporary and onwards with chemo. My understanding is that a blocked ear from Radiotherapy tends to happen fairly late on in treatment. So it’s really important that they know which sort of hearing loss you have. I got hearing loss from my3rd and final cisplatin as well as tinnitus. I now have hearing aids as cisplatin damage tends to be permanent.
I think feeling nauseous at the end of week 1 is very demoralising with so far to go, so stay strong. Once I got over the nausea I was pretty well up until the final week, so hang in there things should improve quickly from now for a while.

Good evening Juddles, i had the same treatment plan as you but thankfully I never suffered from any side effects from the Cisplatin not sure if females are more prone to the side effects. As suggested please let your team know about how you are feeling as they will adjust or change the drugs being used. Hope the rest of the treatment goes well , best wishes.

Thank you Hillary for the support, nausea is subsiding but it's the mucus and ear blocking that's worring, I was not expecting severe side effects this early on, if at all.
Every body on here are so supportive and have learned a lot, hope your keeping well.
