Hi

Last week I was told the lesion and lump in my mouth is cancerous, SCC I seem to remember (a bit of a fog after that).

I'm being referred to a Maxillofacial consultant but the dental hospital mentioned I'd have up upper right hand side teeth and bones removed but no reconstructive surgery, likely to build up a palate (still a bit of a fog).  This may change when I see the consultant.

I'm just wondering if anyone out there has any advice on any other options available that you know of or have experienced.

We have put together some questions my husband and I want to ask such as is if they don't do reconstructive work, can it be done elsewhere, if they carry out the work and no there's no reconstruction can it be done at a later date.  We will also ask them what my options are.

I don't know how long after seeing the consultant an operation will happen. I've just had a scan and the results of that may well change what happens to me.

Any little bit of help would be so much appreciated and many many thanks in advance.

Hi, I've had the upper right side of my jaw and teeth on that side removed and have an obturator (which I am guessing is the palate that they mentioned?).  I know it all sounds really disfiguring but it may not be so.  I look no different to before the operation, just still a bit swollen on the right side of my face, and my family say I sound exactly the same at the moment.  I am  currently on week four of six weeks of radiotherapy to the area.

I thought you might find this site useful http://www.maxillectomy.com/

The blogger has had his upper jaw removed and an obturator.  He has videos of himself on there talking and pictures of the obturator that replaces his jaw.

Hope all goes well for you

    Hi Cheryl

Thank you for replying and letting me know what you've gone through. That's great news that it's gone well and you can still be and look like yourself, apart from I guess the emotional side of it.

I hope all is going well with your treatment and in 2 weeks all will be ok for you. I'm still coming to terms with the news and finding it hard to concentrate, there's so much on here its unbelievable and people have been wonderful.

    Thanks for blog link.

I’ve had half the roof of my mouth removed with four front teeth.  I have an obtarator with four front teeth.  You get used to the obtarator and my teeth look better than what I had before.  Just have to ask the why,

    Hi TDN68

Thank you for your message. I've got an appt today with maxillofacial surgeon/team and a load of support people. On Monday gone I met the consultant who discussed what would happen and I'm due to have OP end of December. Still scared of it all.

  • Hope all went well with the  Max fac consultant and his team today Seabee x
