my treatment finished on Friday, I’m on a completely liquid diet, loads of supplements and still being sick. I think it’s possibly the secreations from my throat that are causing this now. Are these going to improve any time soon, or is this going to be an ongoing issue. My neck is also very dry and crusty now.

  • Hello , yes these issues will improve in time as the radiotherapy is still working , you could ask your team for some cream which will help , any cream or lotion with vitamin E is supposed to be good , bio oil etc . But please check before using any lotions or potions, also well done in getting through the treatment ,its nice to see. Wishing you all the best ,take care .

  • I would say use the cream that you were given for some time yet, also you say that you think the secretions are making you sick, I took mine out and didn't try to swallow them most of the time as they wouldn't go down that easily, if you don't do this give it a try just use a toilet roll or tissues to spit them into or remove them.

  • Agree with Ron much better to get them up and clear your throat,it's  a bind up and down to toilet but I honestly don't think I could swallow the gunk

I take it youve got a nebulizer on the go to loosen the gunk up also I've just started taking a syrup my team gave me began with c  carbenstone or something, will put it up when I get home

  • Carbocisteine is what its called breaks the mucus up I believe into more manageable amounts if that's the right word !!

Grim process but needs must Neutral face

I  spitting them out, but that is sometimes when it makes me gag and no I have not been given a nebuliser.

  • Hi Kay

ask the hospital, for one yiu can either use saline or I used plain boiled tap water on occasion yiu have to use the nebuliser severalmrimes a day for it to be effects. I too was given carbusistine but nit until treatment finished . It’s is horrible but the mucus is there to protect our throats from the damage i remember going through a box of tissues a day at one point. Niw I am left one year onward with the total opposite ie a dry mouth ! It’s a ni win situation but at least am here !

I had severe mucosis and was told to use a nebuliser with saline four times a day. I'd go through at Least a box of Tissues a day & couldn't sleep for about a month due to the amount of gunk/liquid even though I was sitting up. My mouth continued to be full of blisters too and I had constant thrush in my mouth. I was given carboscisteine to help break down the secretions. After about a month it got better but mine was really servere, maybe that's why it takes so long. I'm 12 weeks out of radiotherapy & my nose runs while I eat. I've been told this is part of the mucosis (damage to linings). I have supersensativity to sugar, pepper, vinigar, salt, so the linings have still not recovered yet. It was the hardest bit I think but it does improve. To start takes everyday as it comes and then once past a moth you'll seen teeny improvements every week.   We're all here for you.
