Hi all, 3 days ago I was diagnosed with salivary gland cancer (the tumour is in the parotid gland on the left side of my face). This diagnosis was a big shock for me, especially as I am 21 and am just about to start my masters degree. Has anyone been through a similar experience? I’m really not sure what I’m supposed to expect over the next few weeks and months with my treatment and the side effects.
Hello Sabby
have you had a treatment plan given to you? All of us here have had surgery or chemotherapy or radiotherapy, some have had all three so we can at least help with what you might expect generally.
Take care
Dani

Hi Beesuit, they haven’t given me the full details yet, I have my CT scan in 3 days time so my expectation is that they’ll give me more information about my treatment plan after the scan. However they did say that they would schedule my surgery for as soon as possible, any time within the next 2-3 weeks
It’s an awful lot to take in. I can’t stress the importance of trying not to panic. Take somebody sensible to all your appointments and try to have a list of questions you want to ask. Ask away here once you know what’s happening

Hi Sabby,
Until you have a better idea of the treatment plan then there is little that we can say for sure about how it will go. What I will say, though, is that it will be harder and more disruptive to your life than you will be expecting at the moment. Please, make sure that your uni are kept fully informed because there is no way you will be able to tough it out and pretend to anyone that it isn't happening.
If you need to defer for a year then do so, because your recovery will be compromised by stress if you try to push through to keep up with your course deadlines, and your masters will be compromised by the time you will inevitably need to take off to recover, and by the impact of the treatment on your ability to perform effectively at uni.
I'm sorry to say this, but in all likelihood recovery will be slow and it will most likely be several months before you are able to function at anything like your current level. Talk with your uni, if you haven't already, and you should find that they will bend over backwards to help you to get through your treatment and then your masters.
Best wishes,
Josie
Good morning SabbyKo , I agree with the other guys in waiting for the scan results and treatment plan , on my first cancer I had an operation followed by radio and chemo , so you might get one of these or a mixture depending what they find . The good news is that they are acting quickly giving them the best chance to sort it , plus your age should be a big advantage . Please let us know the outcome and good luck for your scan next week .

Hello Sabby, sorry to hear about your diagnosis lovely. I had cancer in a tonsil and one lymph node. Had 6 weeks radio and chemo therapy. The team that will be looking after you will discuss a treat ment plan with you. You may have radio and chemo, might be surgery, might be both. Shame this has come at a time when you are just about to embark on your Masters Degree, but Cancer is Cancer and it comes at whatever time it blooming well likes, annoyingly! You are young, you have bags and bags of time in front of you my friend. Pour all your strength into the next few months to get this 'sorted', for want of a better word, then do your Masters Degree. I wish you well. My advice, DO NOT GOOGLE and take a day at a time, and do not predict the future in your head. I wish you well my friend xx
