Need some advice please

I have a history of mouth cancer, first symptoms was a swollen lymph node in neck, fist time removed then when another lymph node swelled,  a neck disection was done Then a year later primary found on tongue,  radiotherapy was the treatment at that time,  that was 15 years ago, and nothing since

about 6 months ago a lymph unde rmy chin became swollen  not in the radiation treatment field, 've had 2 fine needle biopsies that where inconclusive, at that time they also  found a nodule on thyroid, it was tested twice but again inconclusive

Just got a letter saying there not going to operate on the lymph and there going to monitor it ????  I'm shocked by this responce with my history

They have called me back regarding the nodule, but personally I am more  concerned with the Lymph, and there apparent monitoring, really with my history.?

Some helpful advise really  needed right now

  • I can understand how worried you must be

Is this the same hospital that treated you first time?

It looks like they couldn’t find any further cancer and I don’t suppose they are hiding anything from you.

If you are concerned it’s your right to ask for a second opinion. Your team will not mind at all. The medical profession is used to second opinions.

It might put your mind at rest or reveal something that’s been missed; the former, I hope.

    Thankyou for your response

It is is the same hospital alas very different team

I did not add when It all started I had biopsies originally they all also came back inconclusive til they took the lymphs out and the cancer showed itself

And alas I always go into my appointments and say everything is OK

I'm unsure if I have the confidence to ask for a second  opinion and theres  no one I would ask to support me with this hence my appeal on hear for advice x

Can you maybe contact one of your Macmillan nurses to give you that support?

i know it’s not easy. We put so much faith in a medical profession that we don’t understand.

Its potentially your life and you mustn’t be afraid of taking things further if you feel your diagnosis is lacking

I have personal experience of this. I diagnosed my own SCC when the consultant I was referred to by my GP( who shared his opinion) felt sure there was nothing there. I insisted on an MRI which I got and I would have got one privately if one wasn’t forthcoming on the NHS

Nobody on here can give you a clinical opinion I’m afraid

  • Hi Helen

I agree with Beesuit in that I think your best course of action would be to ask for a second opinion.

I know it seems quite daunting to do so but as Beesuit pointed out, medical teams are used to second opinions and will be happy for you to request one.

Good luck and I do hope your concerns are resolved satisfactorily.

  • Hi Nele , I would seriously go for a second opinion as the  other two ladies have said, thankfully my consultant never hesitated in doing the correct thing due to my history , as soon as I had a problem it was biopsies and scans straight away , im not a lover of these fine needle biopsies as I have known them to be proved wrong as well as right , you should at least had a scan . If you are not happy in ANY way and feel worried and concerned then you should go and see your lead Head and Neck nurse and ask to see your consultant for a second opinion . They will not mind and they are duty bound to put your concerns first and deal with them accordingly , I fully understand your concerns and im sure we would act the same as you , sometimes you have to stick up for yourself and let them know your true feelings /emotions , I had to do it once when I felt they were dragging their heels ,so a meeting was arranged with my consultant , head and neck nurse and a couple of others . It was a bit nerve racking but they were very happy to listen and the problem was sorted with a smile . As I say my advice is very similar to the other twos Linda and Beesuit so I hope this gives you some confidence in asking for a second opinion or they do further more conclusive tests . Wishing you all the best ,take care .

    Hi Chris

I had a scan initially and the lymph was found at that time the nodule on the thyroid was found during the first FNH while having the ultrasound to take the sample from the lymph.

I have not been signposted to the head and neck nurse, I will ask for this at my next appointment which is this week.

Hopefully I can get this resolved

    Thanks for your advice

    Helen x
