Hi, I had a pet scan last Oct 2018 and they found my left tonsil picked up tracer and was slightly larger than the right. Today I saw a consultant who has said I will be discussed at an MDT meeting on Thursday. I was told I would probably need an MRI and a tonsillectomy at 59! I’m still recovering from major bowel cancer and now have a barbie bum no coccyx and a permanent stoma. Please can someone stop my head from spinning?
Probably can't stop your head spinning I'm afraid Ewok but here goes.
Why, if they found something possibly amiss with your tonsil did they leave it eight months to do something about it? On the face of it you'd think because they weren't greatly concerned I'd have thought.
What led to you being seen by a consultant today, presumably an ENT one? I'm not being very helpful I know but I'm a bit unclear on what's going on for you, can you fill in a few details?
Metastatic SCC diagnosed 8th October 2013. Modified radical neck dissection November, thirty-five radiotherapy fractions with 2xCisplatin chemo Jan/Feb 2014. Recurrence on larynx diagnosed July 2020 so salvage laryngectomy in September 2020.
Thanks, yes can do. As far as bowel surgery goes this is probably one big job and recovery is slow so there was enough to cope with and throat was the last thing to think about but I’ve mentioned the pet scan result a few times re tonsil as it seemed that nothing was being done. So finally I get an appointment 8 months on after I raised it again earlier this month. So yes to see ENT. Yes after so much time I thought it would be a tick in the box ....go away. So we wait and see.
Sorry for the delayed response, been out for the day; you really have been through the mill haven't you. First off there are many causes for a swollen tonsil and most of them aren't cancer, they may remove it anyway to biopsy it to check it out. Do you have any other signs that it might possibly be cancer (eg a sore throat, ear pain, a painless lump in your neck, difficulty swallowing, weight loss, frequent coughing, change in voice)?
Easy to say but try not to worry too much, my brother had bowel cancer some years back so I know how tough that can be so the last thing you need is another grenade chucked at you; I'm sure if your team were seriously concerned they'd have acted before now.
One word of warning though; if they do a tonsillectomy it's going to hurt (it's much more painful to have it done as an adult, trust me) so make sure you get lots of pain relief. I'm the same age as you and I remember at primary school virtually every other week someone was off for a few days as theirs were whipped out almost routinely at any sign of tonsillitis, wish they'd done mine!
Hope all goes well for you, keep us informed and feel free to ask anything.

After saying the consultant would contact after the MDT meeting I feel totally let down because she didn’t so I’m still waiting to find out and it’s purgatory. Do they know they are messing with people's lives when they say things and don’t do anything. I rang the hospital yesterday having waited in all day on Thursday and no joy. The consultants secretary was having a day off and the consultant was too. Ring on Monday. Grrr.
It’s difficult waiting. My oncologist, who is an absolutely charming, dedicated and very clever man, I am absolutely convinced is somewhere along the autistic spectrum. He insists on rattling on about other stuff and last time I had to tell him to shut up and give me my results. NOW.
I was on six week appointments with a PET/CT scheduled before the next one and I was called for that a week after my last appointment so had to wait five weeks knowing they had my results three days after the scan. It’s dreadful. Hang on in there
