Hello all, my husband is being treated for tonsil cancer with 6 sessions of chemo & 30 sessions of radiotherapy. When we went for his last chemo session today & his bloods weren't good enough to go ahead. They have given us potassium for him to take for a couple of days & then try again later in the week. I'm sure the Doctor mentioned that he could get away with missing off the last session. Do you think this is possible? Has this happened to anyone else? Thanks Niki x
Hi Niki,
Yes, it happened to me too, and I am now 6 years past the end of my treatment. My consultant told me that the low dose chemo is an aid to the radiotherapy, and serves to potentise the effects of the RT rather than attack the cancer in its own right. Given that this is the last one, and the doctor has told you that it is fine to miss it if need be, then I wouldn't worry. There is no point having the last one if there is no more radiotherapy for it to help by the time he has it!
Best wishes,
Josie
Morning Josie,
Many thanks for this information it has helps a lot. I was one of things that I thought I heard but wasn't sure.
Niki
Thanks Ron it is good to know it is "normal". Sorry you where in hospital for your last week but I know what you mean about it being easier on the transport side. I'm in the middle of the fun trying to sort it out for his last few days.
Regards
Niki
Just repeating the above answers for emphasis Niki, I missed my last one also; I'd pretty much made my mind up that I was going to refuse it anyway but then my team made the decision for me, said I wasn't well enough. Common occurrence in my experience.
Metastatic SCC diagnosed 8th October 2013. Modified radical neck dissection November, thirty-five radiotherapy fractions with 2xCisplatin chemo Jan/Feb 2014. Recurrence on larynx diagnosed July 2020 so salvage laryngectomy in September 2020.
Hi I was due for 3 x 33% chemotherapy but onky had 2 joint decision made my oncologist and myself .like others say it’s a top up to the radiotherapy percentage wise it’s onky a tiny amount inteh great scheme of things so don’t worry
