I went to GP after i notice a lump on neck
GP ordered FBC and US, in ultrasound they found out a 7mm lymph node in neck very near to wisdom teeth
GP said it is reactive lymp node probably due to damaged wisdom teeth or recent cold and based on blood test( i had cold a month back and tooth infection 10 days prior to that)
he said he wont recommend me for ENT, but since i am worried he recommended for second opinion
however the appointment is after 81 days, is there any way of getting seen fast? probably by going to emergency dept of some other hospital?
Hi Sridhar. I really sympathise with your concerns. However you are in the great situation in that 2 health professionals (GP & Radiologist) feel you have a simple explanation for your lump. Lymph nodes commonly enlarge with infection and clearly your recent wisdom tooth problem and cold are great explanations. Of course, if your lump persists or gets bigger - go back to your GP and I’m sure he will ask for the referral to be speeded up. Hopefully in a week or 2 it will have disappeared........in the meantime, console yourself that you have had an investigation which has shown no reason for concern.Finger crossed for you,
Hilary
Thanks for the reply, but i noticed that lymph node a year back(when i had my half broken wisdom tooth) , it is still there, no change in size ,i have to press my finger a bit deep on skin to touch it, radiologist showed his nodes and said some time they become hard and will be like that for life.
May i know when you had lymp nodes swollen with tonsil cancer where are the located?, i mean how far from the jaw are they and are they at middle or near the end?
The lymph node has been there a year and it’s only 7mm?! Brilliant - no wonder GP not concerned. I’m not a doctor, but I know this - cancer grows. If lymph node there so long, no problem. My lymph node was 14mm when I first noticed it, Ultrasound immediately picked up 2 others next door - all of concern in appearance. That’s possible cancer, and it was. If I had a 12 month duration 7mm node I would be skipping off into the sunset to enjoy myself and forgetting about the lymph node. So please don’t spend so much time worrying. If it gets bigger - go back to GP they will upgrade your referral. Have a brilliant weekend - no worrying!

Hi Hilary. Can I ask what your symptoms were x I’ve got an enlarged lymph node I’ve had for 7 weeks nearly 8 now. Ultrasound measure it but can’t remember what it was . He scanned rest of my neck and couldn’t find any other enlarged ones. I’ve had pain in my cheeks for over a year and drs our it down sinusitis now I’m thinking it’s cancer and spread to lymph nodes. The report didn’t say they looked suspicious but I know that doesn’t always mean everything is normal. I’ve managed to get ent appointment for Tuesday but I am so scared .
Hi mummyto3 I guess in initial stage there will not be any symptoms or indications, most probably it is unrelated lymph node swelling, even the person who did ultrasound on me asked me to touch his nodes, he has a couple of hard nodes, but most of the accounts I read on tonsil cancer has lymph node swelling on the side of tonsil which is a suspect or sore throat which doesn't go away
Hi Mummyto3. Sorry you are having such an anxious time. If the ultrasound didn’t find anything suspicious that’s great. They are always looking for suspicious/cancerous lymph nodes and know what they are doing. The only symptom I had was a large lymph node which was growing all the time - no other symptoms. They did ultrasound and were immediately concerned. They know what they are doing - really. There is a very low threshold for further investigation if there’s any chance of cancer and they clearly didn’t have that concern - brilliant news for you. So please don’t beat yourself up with the worst possible scenario. It isn’t helping you or your family at all. The ENT appointment on Tues should reassure you. Please sleep easy.

Hi Hilary thanks for positive reply . I have moments where I think oh it’s going to be fine then bouts of crying and thinking what if it’s something they can’t so . I’ve got ache on right side now so paranoid it’s my liver and it’s spread. Just have to get to Tuesday and see what happens . Time is dragging so bad .
I thorought of updating everyone here, I went to ENT September 3, he did insert camera down my nose and took a look at my tonsils and dismissed me , he said he is not concerned, so I stopped worrying
But from few weeks I started noticing a sensation while swallowing solids, I am worried but thought it might be Globus feeling due to me worrying, yesterday pain increased and I felt pain for swallowing saliva too, something like aching muscle, it decreased a bit today, I will watch it for a week and will go to GP if necessary
