HI all, been an avid reader but this is my first post. 12 months on from my operation, I want to go abroad. I take all food, liquids and medicines via a RIG. Can I take my 'feeds' with me? I use Nutricia Fortis supplements. Can they go in the plane hold? I also have a suction machine that would need to travel with me. I presume I am not the first to be in this situation, so any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

  • Good evening Ackerdsa , i have flown twice and take a couple of bottles Ensure feeds and a syringe as well as any meds i might need, they will check you at customs so make sure you have a printed prescription with you with your meds and feed on it , you could also get a letter from your doctor just to be on the safe side, they might also question your rig /peg feeding tube depends on how thorough they are. All your Fortis and suction machine etc will be able to go into the hold but you might have to pay if it outside the luggage allowance , hope this is of some help. All the best and good luck.

  • Hi

I think I read on an old post some time ago that the company that supplies your feed will arrange to have them delivered directly to your hotel in Europe. Might be worth asking. Someone else had said they had bought a very cheap suitcase to take theirs in and didn't bother bringing it back

Glad to hear your branching out. Hope you get sorted,

  • Hello, I went to Greece with tui and spoke to them on the phone explaining I needed to take fortisips. As Chris said I had a print out of my prescription and took a cool bag( light weight one) which held 5kg. They didn't charge me any extra and it went in the hold.

Good luck and enjoy your holiday.

Thanks for the reply Chris. It went quite smoothly in the end. I carried all my Fortis bottles as hand luggage (which slowed everything down at Manchester Airport at the scanner - 3 bottles only in a tray and I had 51 ! ) I was told by the suppliers (Nutricia) that they could not go in the hold due to the low temperature. It would have made the journey much easier if it could have gone in the hold.

Thanks Wend. I've heard about the delivery to your destination, which seems a great idea. Would be a bit nervous about it being there though, Thanks for your help.

Thanks little-fi. If you and others have put the Fortis in the hold and not experienced any problems, I will try next time. Was advised by Nutricea that this was a no-no due to the low temperature in the hold.
