Hi everyone, I'm new to this so here goes. My boyfriend was diagnosed with throat cancer on 15th January, he finished is 6 week radiotherapy (30 sessions) on 18th April. He did have 3 chemo sessions but had to be stopped due to it affecting his kidneys. At the moment his mucusitus, mouth ulcers are quite bad and salt water rinses don't seem to be easing it which I thought it would almost 2 weeks post treatment, any advice?

  • Hi this is Hazel I a must 8 month post radio for tonsil  cancer the mucusistis can last longer than 2 weeks unfortunately.we are all different there’s no rule of thumb unfortunately.

i have a blog detailing my own experiences with a link to another guy Ian

    www.radioactiveraz.wordpress.com.

mine was tonsil cancer with lymph node  spread ,I got a all, clear from my pet scan in January just wntbvisits for next 5 years and am living my life. The treatment is tough the recovery can be testing but as I said we are all different .

soes your boyfriend have a nebuliser? The hospital should be able to help loaning ine they do help, but one way of looking at it the mucus is protectingbthe delicate mouth and throat no consolation I know as I suffered quite badly with ut. Only thing I have now is The dreaded dry mouth !!

    good luck keep in touch

Hi like Hazel I found a nebuliser very helpful.

I also found manuka honey great for soothing mouth and helping with mouth blisters.

This is probably the roughest point just now but it does get better xx

    Hi there,

I went through the same treatment regime finishing on 30th November and can confirm  things will slowly improve.  As my consultant said in January     dont worry every month you will feel a little better!  Well 30 days are a very long time when your are feeling crap. But now four months on  I definantly do feel better.   The Mucusitus went first probably within a month of finishing treament,  like your boyfriend i had mouth ulcers big ones which porevented me swalling anything for at least two months.   I was prescibed a mouth wash  called xylocaine which is a spray for your throat and brings tears to your eyes  for a few sconds before numbing completley. Only then was I able to drink  and then a few days later start to eat.   Taste and dry mouth are  still a big issue but  at last i can see the light at the end of the tunnel and you both will to.

Stick with it things will improve but dont expect daily milestones

    All the best
