I find it difficult to find food I can eat. I dont want milk based since I have enough from the peg. I really want more vegetables. So far my dieticians have never suggested anything and i have to use trial and error. (mostly error). I also have endless endoscopys (20 so far) since my food pipe narrows all the time. They dont want to make me a stent but instead have given me a very long tube to put in my mouth which reaches my stomach to put in daily a few times to stop it narrowing. As you can imagine a stent would be a lot better. If anyone knows a hospital where they would put one in I would be grateful. My problem is basically that although now my food pipe is about 15mm after four endoscopies and once the food is in the pipe it will go down perhaps with a a bit of help from a liquid the problem is getting it there. It is like taking a tablet which takes a lot of effort and can only be done a few times. Also i have difficulty using a spoon which fills the whole mouth so I have to use a fork. Here are some vegetables i have tried without success. Potatoes, beans, bread, these are not sharp but are like a tablet. Courgettes and mushrooms are the only ones that are easy to eat and go down well even when my pipe was only 10mm. Sweet potatoes, aubergines, carrots, cauliflower even though some are easy to eat they are too strong for my mouth and the taste lingers on. I also need sweets because of the bad taste in my mouth and have found them all too strong except what is called toffee which i can suck. I cant seem to manage any fruit juice except a bit of grape juice, but I can drink plenty of tea but need a lot of sugar. If anyone can advise any more food or drink I would be very grateful.
My husband uses a teaspoon for a lot of things - not just to eat from, but also to manipulate items into the right position for swallowing. He has a favourite teaspoon which is not too bulky or deep, and I am not sure what he would do if he lost it!. A lot of foods he can eat with other cutlery, but for some things only the teaspoon will do as it gives so much control.
Thanks. My problem with vegetables like I mentioned, for instance aubergine is very similar to courgettes and went through even when my 'hole' was less than 10mm but it was too strong for my mouth to take. I dont believe liquidising them would make a difference. The special spoon interests me very much. My cancer was in my voicebox and there was nothing wrong with my mouth which is quite a distance from it but they radiated or should I say over-radiated it just the same and that is the cause of all my problems. I wonder if your mouth was also in order before the radiation. I have already copied here that the mouth uses twenty muscles to be able to swallow and it seems many of mine are ruined and I would add, in my opinion totally unnecessarily. But I have now to live with it and make the best of it what I can.
