Hello, my husband has just completed first cycle of chemo ( 1 day in hospital & then 96 hour pump). Having got over a terrible day with constipation - next time I will ensure we have some remedy to hand before it becomes critical - but wanted to know if the constipation issues only arise while taking the anti nausea drugs or whether they continue in between sessions? Also he has what he describes as a “furry” mouth - any comments/suggestions on this. Finally his skin is looking bad - hospital said use Aveeno but I wonder about Jergens or Diprobase?

Many thanks for any thoughts.

Alp

  • Hi I had 2 chemotherapy and 35 radiotherapy forvtonsil cancer with lymph nodes affected. After first chemotherapy I would have had constipation as I was also taking cocodomol for pain relief shortly after followed by oramorph.inwas taking movicol daily which kept everything regular my chemomwas delivered in a 10 hours session ,niotbwith a pump.

As for skin my only advise would be onky use what yiur radiotherapy team advises ,otherwise if yiu have adverse reactions it could take longer to get tomsource. I only used what was advised butbstill ended uo with 3 rd degree neck burn. As for furry mouth is your hubby brushing  duraphat toothpaste plus do nit use mouthwash with any alcohol at all only prescribed 0 alchil ones not even shop bought ones.

I am 8 month post radiotherapy and still suffer from furry teeth in my highly radiated  side.

i also have a blog if you want to read ,the newest post is the first one so scroll to bottom for beginning.

  • Hello Alp, Not the best thing to discuss but I'm afraid that constipation is a common side effect with cancer treatment plus any painkillers etc he is on, I get lactulose on prescription and take it regularly otherwise I know what will happen. Just tell your husband to make a mental note of his bowel movements as it should be once a day on average. I use cordysyl ( chemist own ) mouth wash every day to help with oral hygiene. I cannot recommend much for his skin but when I had radiotherapy I used aqueous cream so not sure if that would help it's worth asking. My last treatment with radio and chemo was in2008 so expect there are better products available, do ask. My chemo was just a few hours in hospital then back home so did not have the pump, Best wishes, take care.

Hi Alp, I use to take lactolose on prescription for constipation and used it regurly throughout treatment. A lot of the drugs tend to make you constipated and then the constipatition increases nausea and you don’t want eat. It would be good to get something now from your hubbys team or else you can easily get yourself into a vicious cycle.

I used diprobase for my skin during treatment - this was just what my team recommended. I started with a cream and then had to move to a diprobase gel later on. I’m not sure how much rt your hubby is having. I had 35 sessions so still landed up with burns on my neck and had to have special dressings and other creams near the end. I would go with what your team recommend. If you feel the Aveeno isn’t doing the job as time goes on just ask them for something different.

    All the best

  • Hi there I had 2 chemo & 30 rt for tongue cancer and was on a variety of drugs including MST(morphine) & metoclopromide for anti nausea. Constipation was a problem and I used lactulose until I could no longer takes oral medicines. I then was prescribed senna which I could put through my peg. Your medical team have a range of solutions so make sure you let them know what’s going on and what works or doesn’t work.

I used diprobase & betnovate creams on my neck during rt and these limited the damage.

    Good luck
