Hi my mum has just finished her 7 weeks radiotherapy treatment for throat cancer, unfortunately due to the treatment she is unable to swollow any liquid or food so she has had a peg fitted,

her last blood test came back showing she was dehydrated and every time we try to get a fortisip drink down her she is sick. I know a lot of people struggle with these drinks so I was wondering if there anything else we could put down her peg tube safely to help keep nutrition up and fluids

thanks

  • Not sure what a fortisip drink is so can't answer about that, I was on big bottles of brown stuff over night and at times I had Ensure drinks that all went down the PEG, if it's making her sick ask her dietitian for something different I had to in hospital as the first stuff they gave me made me feel sick if it went in at the normal speed (I was nil by mouth). You can put extra water down the peg apart from what she uses to rinse it before and after use I would think but you might ask first to be safe, I could sip water so was a bit better off than her but couldn't take the sugar in the little drinks.

  • Hi there. There are different drinks to try. The fortisips were too thick for my dad, they made him gag and vomit. He found others too sweet though, though they were more like a milk consistency. He has procal now. He has 4x30ml shots per day and they’re 100 calories per shot. He finds these better as it doesn’t take long to drink them. There’s 3 flavours, banana, strawberry and neutral. The neutral ones are good to stick in coffee. Hope this helps. Sarahxx

  • Oops ... pressed post before I’d finished....My dad is being fed through a nasal jej. He had a bag of brown stuff (nurricia or something) which is on 12 hours through the night. It gives him 1500 calories. He’s put on a stone since mid November.

  • Hello Cares 90 , i have been peg feeding for 9 years now and have always been on Ensures which are similar to Fortisips being a food supplement , i have Ensure compact as they are small bottles and holds two syringe full so its not a lot of liquid going in  . A lot of the trouble is when you you dont eat via the mouth the stomach shrinks so sometimes you have to be carefull not to syringe to much at a time so its spaced out throughout the day . As Ron said you can put more water through the peg as this will help the dehydration , there are quite a few food supplements available but can only be prescribed by a dietitician or DR so maybe give them a ring as they will be offer something different . Also i would ask about having anti sickness tablets as some people on here had to take them after treatment . I know some people use Complan but im not sure if they use it for peg feeding ,maybe a chemist could help there as its going to be difficult to see a dietitican during the Christmas period . Hope you manage to sort something out for your mum , all the best .

  • My husband had a similar problem when he finished treatment, his dietician suggested a pump feed through the PEG that fed over a few hours, he then managed his daily intake without feeling sick. Prior to this he couldn’t tolerate the fortisip through his peg. It was slightly restrictive but you can put the system in a rucksack and you are mobile. We think it may have been the volume and speed that you syringe whereas the automatic feeder feeds very slowly into the stomach. Best of luck, he’s now drinking the fortisip can’t say he enjoys but more of a needs must as he would like the peg removed.

  • his dietician suggested a pump feed through the PEG that fed over a few hours,

I did exactly that with my NG tube. I fed by pump overnight.
