Just had my surgery for severe dysplasia under tongue and floor of mouth. They had to remove quite a large chunk. Have a lot of swelling of tongue and under jaw. Can't really eat yet and drinking is difficult. How long before swelling subsides? Will get path lab reports in 2 - 3 weeks and may need Ultra sound of lymph nodes under jaw.
Hi Steve. I am sorry that no one has replied yet to your post. I'm replying to get it back up to the top of the list. I did not have the same op as you but had ops for jaw cancer. However I'm sure that the swelling you describe is something that others have had with their ops. I think it takes around 6 weeks for swelling to subside although it should improve slowly before that. You might have to resort to soft foods and nutritional drink supplements for a while until things improve. Do you have a feeding tube? If so that is the way to go at the moment. Have you had an appointment with a speech pathologist as they should be able to give you advice in relation to the eating and drinking. If not ask for an appointment as the last thing you need to happen at the moment is to lose weight.
Good luck with the ultrasound.

Good evening, Stevebe26. Sorry for the late reply (trouble signing in). My first operation was on the floor of the mouth and a bit of my tongue. I would say it takes a good two weeks for the swelling to go down, although when people visited me, they could see progress every day, which was a great encouragement. The floor of my mouth was repaired with a skin flap(graft) taken from my forearm, and i had to wait until i could pass a swallow test before i was allowed home. Again, this was about two weeks, i also had lymph nodes removed during this operation, so hopefully you don't need any further surgery. You should find that you will make a good recovery, but might need help from a dietician and speech and language therapist. Wishing you all the best, take care.
Chris
Thanks all. Feeling a little better 6 days in and can manage yogurt today. Swelling seems static now. Have to wait until 12 June for path lab results though. Had adrenal crisis today due to addisons disease but now stable again. Was brought on by after effects of surgery on my system. Consultant to discuss scanning my lymph nodes in neck when I see him as I do have a couple that are enlarged but not painful. Floor of mouth was stitched closed so feels rather tight at moment. Excision was approx 5cm x 2.5 cm.
