I’ve been diagnosed with advanced oesophageal cancer. It has spread to at least two lymph nodes and my liver. It was quite a shock but I was advised to see a private oncologist which I am doing tomorrow. I was given the impression that nothing can be done to cure it but that maybe he can offer me some palliative treatment to slow it down. I’m finding it very difficult to eat. One day something’s fine and the next it isn’t. I am 77 years old so I guess I have had good luck until now. I’ve never been in a position when’re I ´ce had to try and put on weight. Everyone keeps saying EAT. And I really dread it!
it’s good to find a place where I can find others who can understand and where we can help each other.
Hey PJR,
Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I'm a lot younger than you and was diagnosed with stage 4 osophagus cancer too with secondaries in my lympthnodes. I've reacted really well to treatment and the secondaries have disappeared. I also had someone in here reach out to me who was in his 60s who was given no hope and his treatment managed to work miracles and he is cancer free now. Obviously this isnt the case for everyone, but don't give up hope and believe in the docters even if they do give you a bad prognosis.
My eating actually got better when I started treatment and hopefully the same happens for you. Have a read of my profile which you can do by clicking on my name as I explained everything I did and learnt whilst trying to improve my eating. At one point I could barely stomach soup without being sick.
How is your eating? Can you give me some examples of what you can eat and what you can't? One thing you should 100 percent do is ask your drs for protien drinks if you can request fresubin I normally hate protien drinks and these taste delicious
Thank you so much Vinny1986 for your words of encouragement. I am about to start chemotherapy with immunotherapy included. After meeting with the oncologist I was feeling slightly more positive but your note increased that level a great deal. I did read your information and have found it helpful . Thank you for sharing.
Morning, that is good to hear. Immunotherapys are quite new do yourself a favour and don't Google any of the drugs as you will just go down a dark hole. Im not a docter, but my understanding is The chemotherapy will be doing its work battering your tumours whilst the immunotherapy drugs teach your immune system to fight the cancer too. It's great that you have a plan in place now to start fighting back.
My approach since day one in my battle has been to believe in the docters, focus on the right nutrition and to be positive. And most importantly Enjoy every day as much as you can. We are all here to help so don't hesitate to ask any questions about side effects or anything
Hi PJR
I know you have placed a few post now, but I wanted to pop in and say Hi,
I was wondering how the Immunotherapy is going?
Lowe'
Dal take lansoprazol every morning half an hour before any food or drink and this seems to have done the trick for him, I hope your new prescription works for you.
The good days and bad days are understandable, things can be tough at times... but the good days make up for it I hope.

I take omeprazol to help with my reflux. It's also worth looking up the GERD diet..my reflux was really bad at the start I decided to reduce acid in my diet by cutting caffeine (get decaf tea/coffee), alcohol, tomato based meals like curries, spicy foods and fried foods out of my diet. This has really helped me I'm not a nutritionist and didn't touch veg before all this, but my diet is mostly fruit, veg and chicken now.
Thanks again Vin your. I was on omeprazole but it didn’t work with my chemo so they just changed the prescription to something else.so far so good! No alcohol, no caffeine only eating porridge, cereals, soups and macaroni cheese at the moment. I know it will get better. I can’t seem to eat vegetables or fruit at the moment. Am having supplements though! Chicken did not work even in tiny slow cooked bits. Does work in soup!
Have you tried having juices mate rather than eating actual fruit and veg. Before all this i would slap you if you put a lettuce in my burger haha so don't think I'm one of these hispter juicers haha. If you haven't got a juicer try going to a juicing shop and getting a green juice tell them to blitz it so there are no thick bits in it. I have juicing recipes in my profile every day even now I'm eating normal I make a green juice of 2 green apples, 1 pear, 3 stalks of celery, some cucumber and then I put in a blender with some spinach. It's all alkaline foods so should be good for your acid reflux. This is a must, go to the drs and get protien suppliments. I highly recommend fresubin they taste nice and are at one point all that I could get in me, they saved my life.
Some tips I found helped me. Make sure you sit up straight, chew your food more than normal and take your time. When I was coughing and spluttering at the start I struggled with even water. What I did was when watching football I'd take a small sip everytime the ball went out of play or every time I did a lap in a racing game on my ps5 to drink slowly but constant.
