Hi everyone
What a week this has been… Last Tuesday I went for an Endoscopy, following on from a 2WW referral my GP had requested the previous week. Straight after the procedure the Endoscopist informed myself and my partner that he had found a tumour in my mid oesophagus and had taken 10 biopsies. He said he was referring me to Macmillan and I would be discussed at MDT meeting. I had a CT scan booked for the following day, which he said would show if anywhere else was affected. On the report form it stated that a fungating growth 3cm in length was found and the diagnosis was Oesophageal tumour - malignant.
To say we were in shock is a massive understatement. I think we still are…
They discussed me at the MDT meeting today and I have been given an appointment for tomorrow morning with the Consultant. I feel very lucky that all this has happened so quickly but it has felt like one of the longest weeks of my life.
Hopefully tomorrow we can know more about what we are dealing with and options etc. l’m scared and anxious but have gained a lot from reading posts on here. It helps to know that I’m not alone with these feelings.
Thank you all xx
Hi. Hopefully after you come out of your meeting today, you will have a plan for going forward. Make sure you bring someone to the meeting with you, make a list of questions before you go in and jot down any answers. It can all be a lot to take in, especially when you’re still dealing with the shock of diagnosis. I was going through what you are in October 2023 and I still remember it well. There are various possible treatment paths but, regardless of which one you follow, there will be people on here who will have travelled it before you who will be able to offer help and advice. Best wishes

Hope everything will go as well as it can for you, and you are in the best place here.
Hello and welcome to the group. You are certainly not alone - I remember being in a state of shock for the first week or so after my husband was diagnosed. I was so scared and just didn't want to accept that this was happening. However, after his first meeting with the consultant and a subsequent chat with one of the nurses from the MDT we both felt a bit calmer and accepting of the situation. It was also reassuring that they were dealing with it quickly, which seems to be the case for you too.
I hope your consultation goes well, do please let us know how you get on. All the best to you. x
Morning Pafos. Reading your post took me straight back to my own diagnosis in May 2023. My own experience was just as you described it. I also received very quick assessments as is the case with yourself. I hope today’s consultation goes well and I will be thinking of you. Best wishes, Julie
Thank you for your messages. I do appreciate it
The meeting today went a lot better than I was expecting. Yes, I do have a tumour in my oesophagus which they are pretty certain is cancer, but it does not appear to have spread to anywhere else, according to the CT scan. The biopsies were not back yet but the Consultant said that if they came back normal I would have to have them done again, as the appearance of the tumour is most certainly malignant.
Once the biopsies are back they are going to refer me to Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital, with a view to having surgery. Myself and my partner were fearing the worst, so this news has given us a new level of hope. I know I am starting out on a very difficult journey but we both now feel that our chances of beating this are better than we feared.
We both feel so much more positive and happier than we did this time yesterday.
Sending big hugs to all xx
You’re welcome Pafos and thanks for letting us know how it went today.
Best wishes, Julie
