My step dad went for Endoscopy on 21.01 he went to the doctors the week before due to some food feeling like it was getting stuck. After the endoscopy we was told they had found a small tumour and they had taken 12 biopsies from the tumour and areas around it. They rang him the next day and booked him in for CT Scans on the Saturday. A specialist nurse rang and went through some health questions and a dietician rang. We didn’t hear anything till yesterday after the MDT meeting my step dad had a call to book him in with the upper GI surgery on Monday at 3pm we took that as a good sign that it might not be anything to serious as we thought he would be booked to see a cancer specialist if it was that but now I’m not sure. Is it good news that he’s seeing a surgeon does anyone have the same type of experience we are still hoping it’s benign.

  • Hi J thank you so much for telling me yours and your husbands journey I am so glad your husband is now through it all and it’s not returned that is great news and great news for us to hear. I’ve just read it to my mum as all the positive journeys on here really make me feel better knowing that we have a chance at beating this. I can imagine it’s going to be a really tough time but knowing that everything is hopefully going to be okay at the end makes it a little less scary. I’m trying to be as positive as I can so this has really helped with that. I know everyone journey is different but at least I know it can be beaten so just trying to stay focused on that. Salford royal are excellent aren’t they they have been great to be fair it’s just the waiting is so hard. Thank you again this has really helped. Sending best wishes to you and your husband

  • Salford Royal really are excellent .There is no doubt in my mind that your step Dad will receive the best care and support .

.I think everyone will agree the waiting is the worst but once treatment starts we found it flowed steadily .

Everyone on here knows exactly what you’re all going through and will be here to answer any questions you may have and to offer lots of support too  .It’s a scary place to be that’s for sure but you are not alone .

    Best wishes

  • Yeah I think we are lucky having Salford royal and Christie’s so close to us and them being the ones that will be treating him. Everyone he’s dealt with so far he’s said they have all been amazing and so nice which I think you really need when you’re going through something like this.

I thought that this waiting is just so hard you just want to know so you can start the process but to be fair they have been quick with us so I should be grateful really. I just want to get him well again and I think once the treatment starts I will feel like we are on the right path.

I have honestly found this forum so helpful I’m so glad I chatted to one of the nurses who then sent me the link to this forum. It has helped me so much to deal with it and made me think positive. I made the mistake of googling it and I just broke down but then I started reading this forum and it’s just raised my hope so much. I can’t thank you all enough for sharing your journeys and all the advice it’s been really helpful and made me feel a lot more positive.

    Best Wishes

  • Sounds very good. PET scan is the normal procedure for everybody I think. I was a bit surprised they had not done that prior to Monday's meeting but I guess procedures differ among various trusts. Also you have not mentioned RT which is sometimes used to shrink the tumour pre-op - maybe it is not very large in the first place - just a layman's comment ( as we all are on here!). Good luck with everything - I am afraid it is a bit of a long haul but I am sure he will get a successful outcome. We are all here to help with advice (non-medical of course !)  at any stage

  • Thank you I’ve just got everything crossed for this PET Scan being clear now. Yeah it looks like it’s part of the process going off what everyone has said but same I so wish they would have already done it this waiting again is horrible. Well they did say it was a small tumour when they did the endoscopy so hopefully with them not mentioning RT that’s good news. Thank you and I hope everything is going well for yourself. Yeah we have just cancelled our cruise as I know it’s going to be a tough year for him now so we all need to be here to support him and get him through it. It’s a gruelling process but as long as he’s going to be okay that’s all that matters. Thank you for your help and advice it’s been very helpful and made me feel positive about everything so thank you for that

  • Hello my step dad went for a PET Scan last week. He’s just been to see the surgeon today and he’s waiting for a pre op for key hole surgery on Tuesday they said this is to do a flush of some kind to check around the area has anyone else had this? They have said the PET Scan was okay and that the Biopsies around the site that they took was not showing cancer but they said it is advanced as it normally is in that area. They have said after the pre op he should be able to have 1 chemo session every 2 weeks for 8 weeks so 4 chemo sessions and then surgery after 6 weeks but they have said he needs to get fit for it can anyone tell me what they did to get fit or best exercise guide? Thank you

  • Hi star

yes it’s called a wash they take samples to examine and see if there is any cancer normally done during a laparoscopy ! I had the same but they fitted a feeding tube at the same time as I couldn’t Grimacingt, I have had my chemo FLOT  4 cycles over 8 weeks now waiting for surgery. Oh and getting fit Grimacing Tricia x

  • I would suggest cardio exercises are going to be the most beneficial as the lungs take a bit of a battering during the operation. I was really fit before my operation and concentrated on doing 40 minute HiiT sessions 5 days a week leading up to the op.

  • Hi Tricia

Yes that sounds like what they have said it must be that I wasn’t sure what they meant but sounds like they are just being extra sure before starting anything which is good Fingers crossed tone1 it sounds like he’s on the same pathway as yourself. That’s the thing my step dads not the gym type but he does like walking so think it’s going to be lots of walking and we are getting him a exercise bike and hoping that does it Grimacing your surgery is soon isn’t it it’s in March is that right? Good luck Tricia sending lots of positive thoughts and hugs your way Leanne x

  • Hi thank you I thought he would be best concentrating on Cardio but thought best to ask on here so thanks for that. He’s not really gym type off person but I was thinking Brisk walking and getting him an exercise bike and hoping that gets him into shape for it I do have the HiiT app so I might try and find him one off there that I think he could do. Thanks for all your help thank you
