Hi, my husband has recently been diagnosed with oesophageal cancer and is about to start chemotherapy (Flot) prior to surgery. He lost a lot of weight prior to diagnosis and his team are very keen for him to regain a little weight if possible, or at least not lose any more weight! He’s been prescribed Actigain juices and shakes which he’s just about forcing himself to drink, but he hates them because he finds them too sweet which makes him feel nauseous. I’m worried that if chemo makes him feel even more nauseous he won’t be able to tolerate them at all.
We realise that these type of drinks are loaded with sugar to increase the much-needed calories but it would be better for him to drink more of something with a bit less sugar. We have been trying various supermarket options, including smoothies and regular milkshakes. He finds these much more palatable but they obviously don’t have all the other nutrients in the Actigain. Does anyone have any recommendations, please?
My husband has needed to stabilise weight post surgery but couldn’t tolerate the sugar levels in the shakes etc. We are using HUEL meal replacement drinks, vanilla at the moment ….. they are large so he has one across the day. 400 calories I think but low sugar. Might help

Hi, I used to make my husband a juice every day from a full head of broccoli, a large orange and a large carrot. He had this before, during & after chemo and it’s not sweet but full of goodness and anti carcinogens. He really didn’t like the drinks provided by the hospital and only drank them occasionally.
I saw an article in the newspaper about a lady who made the juice for her husband and it really helped him so I decided to give it a try (bear in mind this was in 2008 and the prognosis was bleak) - I think a lot of things are about balance. The orange could hardly be tasted, it just helped to counteract the broccoli, the overall taste was ok! I do agree about the acidity and always looked for the sweetest oranges.

To get my husbands weight back up and stabilise I had two smoothies.
I used 200mls of milk or ensure, for the chocolate version I used a scoop or musashi protein choc powder, a teaspoon of olive oil, chocolate topping, a scoop of vanilla sustagen, ice.
for the berry version is used vanilla protein powder instead and a few handfuls of mixed frozen berries, ice.
sometimes using yoghurt and or ice cream to keep things different. Added a little choc powder or caramel topping and cream on top to disguise the ensure taste as he got sick of it.
These both have +/- 50 grams of protein 2600 kilojoules plus vitamins and minerals. I put a couple of prunes in if needed.
All blended up of course.
