Hi again,

Dad is still waiting for a confirmation of a cancer diagnosis.

We are starting our 7th weeks since his CT scan, his 6th week in hospital and still no further along to help him.

Dad still has not been seen by an oncologist/oncology team either.

Please does anyone have any advice on how we can move things along for him?

Thank you

  • Where in the country are you !  My GI nurse was great at getting things moving have you spoken to yours ??

  • South Wales.
    Yes they are aware.
He has been spoken to by several Specalist on Gastro team. But no oncology

  • Hi Moon3. On the surface of it, this does seem a very odd situation particularly as your father is an inpatient. i have not read about anyone else having similar problems when on a ward. Have you fully explored your concerns with the GI contact nurse and/or the ward sister/charge nurse? If you can't get any satisfaction from either of them then of course you can resort to using Pals. I presume your dad is at a major cancer centre. I do hope things progress for you.

  • Hi

It’s quite a while ago but we had a similar issue three years ago with my husband .To cut a very long story short , he endured a five month diagnostic process .Including two hospital admissions during that process .It took a transfer to another hospital and a laparoscopic procedure before he received  his definitive diagnosis .

As your Dad is an inpatient this is certainly not acceptable .The question I would be asking is ..what is the delay and why? If you don’t receive any answers I would put a complaint in to PALS at the hospital  or request to have him transferred to another hospital .

    Hope it’s sorted out soon

  • Hi all,

    Thanks for your responses

He’s had another CT today - perhaps this will help give some more information this week.

Havn’t heard of PALS before - but will possibly be in touch with them soon.

    Thanks

  • Dear Moon3

it seems very strange that the only diagnostic tool you mention is imaging. Imaging alone cannot or should not  provide confirmation of a cancer diagnosis.
Biopsy of the oesophagus is usually achievable but perhaps there is a technical reason this cannot be done in your father’s case?
it is far better for the MDT to gather all the information needed to make a diagnosis and treatment plan. And for him to then see the appropriate consultant (Surgeon, clinical oncologist or medical oncologist).
I agree with the advice given to you here to push for answers as to why there is a delay, as this delay is exacerbating your anguish.

best wishes that you get answers and the appropriate treatment plan in place soon x

  • Hi all

Many thanks to those who suggested getting in touch with PALS.

We have had a detailed and up to date meeting today for dad with Upper GI consultant.

We are still waiting on some more results/specialists - but was helpful to have to set time and place to explain the situation thoroughly.

Dad is being described as a “very complex case”!
