My step dad went for Endoscopy on 21.01 he went to the doctors the week before due to some food feeling like it was getting stuck. After the endoscopy we was told they had found a small tumour and they had taken 12 biopsies from the tumour and areas around it. They rang him the next day and booked him in for CT Scans on the Saturday. A specialist nurse rang and went through some health questions and a dietician rang. We didn’t hear anything till yesterday after the MDT meeting my step dad had a call to book him in with the upper GI surgery on Monday at 3pm we took that as a good sign that it might not be anything to serious as we thought he would be booked to see a cancer specialist if it was that but now I’m not sure. Is it good news that he’s seeing a surgeon does anyone have the same type of experience we are still hoping it’s benign.

  • Thank you J, yes I thought seeing the surgeon sounded positive but now I’m unsure thank you for letting me know and I hope everything went well for your husband

  • Hi thank you so much I will come back on Monday after I have more information

  • Step Dads meeting today - They have said it’s at the top of the stomach and the gullet but it isn’t showing in any other area as per the CT Scan. They have said he can have chemo, surgery and then Chemo but they just want to do a PET Scan first to check the lymph nodes they have said if it shows anything else then they will have to look at the plan again

  • Sounding like good news, Star.

Wishing all the best for the treatment and to you in your support for your stepdad.

  • Did you have to have a PET Scan Tricia is that the normal procedure do you know? That is brilliant news I hope all goes well with the CT Scan and then surgery. I feel a little better just worried about the PET Scan now ha. My step dad really keeps it together he said he just gets upset when he sees us and me mum get upset so trying to just be positive and strong infront of him. I hope everything does well and keep us updated on your journey take care Leanne x

  • Yes I think I had everything going ! I had a endoscopy a CT scan CT PET scan and ultrasound endoscopy and a laparoscopy which is went I had a feeding tube fitted as i was unable to eat which is probably why it took so long ! But I’m positive I will get through this ! And I’m sure your step dad will as well x

  • Ohh wow that’s a lot isn’t it but if that’s what they have to do to make you better then it’s worth it isn’t it. Yeah I was thinking that luckily my step dads step okay eating it was just bread getting stuck sometimes that made him go to the GP. Tricia I’m positive you will to I think your going to smash it and my step dad will as well your both going to do amazing x

  • Hi

In 2022 my husband had his diagnostic Pet , CT PET scans , three endoscopies and an ultrasound endoscopy at another hospital .Long story but after five months he was transferred to Salford Royal .(July )

Under the care of Salford Royal my husband , (pre surgery ) had a laparoscopy , during which a JEJ feeding line was fitted into his duodenum , as by that stage he couldn’t eat or drink orally . From the laparoscopy the extent of his OC was determined ( Stage 2 , and contained within the oesophagus.)  .We then met with his Consultant surgeon and we were introduced to his medical team and then he started four FLOT chemo cycles fortnightly over eight weeks at The Christie hospital .( Sept/Oct )

Three weeks after his fourth chemo cycle there were numerous appointments back at Salford Royal to prepare him and test his fitness for the surgery .Eight weeks post chemo (December ) he had his two part minimally invasive  esophagectomy ..He was in SR for eight days , three in the Critical Care Unit as per hospital protocol  .Several post surgery appointments to check on him followed and eight weeks later he started his FLOT post surgery chemo back at The Christie  .He was 65 when his treatment ended .

He has had a few treatment related issues since but two years have passed and no signs of a recurrence of OC up to date .

Its quite a lengthy process and a long recovery .Your step Dad’s treatment process may differ from my husbands , so this is only going off our experience. One thing I can say for sure is your Step Dad is in excellent hands .Trust the process and his medical team as they really do know what they’re doing .They will use all their expertise and skills to help him through it .

Best Wishes .I hope all goes well
