Prognosis - my Dad is struggling with the not knowing

Hello!

My Dad was diagnosed two weeks ago with T3 N2 M0 oesophageal squamous cell cancer, his tumour is very locally advanced and he was rushed through for a stent placement which took place on the 23rd. Following which the doctor said he is pretty  much at T4 now.

He is severely underweight and hasn’t moved from the sofa since the stent was placed, he won’t eat at all and is only taking water and juice.

His main struggle is the not knowing how long he’s got and he’s starting to become agitated with me and my sisters, he thinks we know something he doesn’t.

I would ask the doctors but I can’t get hold of any of them, probably because of the Christmas break.

I think having an idea of what time he has would help overcome the mental turmoil. If anybody has any experiences they could share - I would be so so grateful.

Gratitude

  • Hi Carre,

so sorry to hear about your dad I am going through the same thing with my father at the moment just waiting to hear whether the doctors can offer him palliative treatment. We have been told by a surgeon that without any treatment he will have 6 months - 1 year. Which is rubbish I know!

One thing I would say is how much you have to try and remain positive, I know it’s hard but maybe get your dad some protein shakes or high calorie shakes you can get ones that are full of nutrients and will help him to get some energy, this is what my dad was having when he lost weight due to his tumour. Hope this helps!

    Hi Anna,

So sorry to hear you are in the same position. I hope the treatment can be offered for your father.

Thank you for sharing, this is a great help.

    wishing you all the best,

    Carre

  • Hi Carre

Im not sure what age your Dad is or what the latest is, but can share my journey.

I had exactly the same staging and squamous cell too.

Its not an easy journey by any means and its a whole new world. My daughter helped me put a blog together that hopefully will help decipher some of the medical terms and procedures and help in some way for all involved.

Please pass on my best wishes. Let him know he should ask anything anytime and not do this journey alone.

    All the best

    Pete

  • Hi Carrie,

So sorry that you have had to find yourself posting here, but as you can see from the great responses so far, this is definitely a good place to have some of your questions or concerns addressed.

Your Dad (and you) must be reeling from shock, often everything seems to happen so fast, going from feeling ok, to feeling a little dodgy to being told of a cancer diagnosis followed by a stent insertion, all that is bad enough, and then right on top of Xmas, well for many that just makes things feel even more as if things are stacked against them in my opinion.  But I truly hope that you and your Dad read Pete's blog, there is hope and a future to go with it.

My husband has a different type of tumour, and didn't need a stent but he has been told a poor prognosis, which he refused to accept, he is currently amazing his oncologist with how well he is doing, so a lot of what happens next may depend on your Dad's mindset, at this difficult time, somehow finding the strength to fight back and move forwards will give him the ability to manage some meal supplements like Fresubin. Has he been prescribed meal supplements yet?
