Hi. My husband has just had his Ivor Lewis surgery five days ago.  Operation went well.  But he wasnt well after and had to be put on a ventilator.  It was removed the following day. But 36 hrs later he was really struggling to breathe and they took the decision to sedate him and put him back on the ventilator where he remains three days on.  He has pneumonia in his left lung and have been told he is very poor.  He is normally such a fit man.  Plays golf weekly. Walks a couple of miles daily.  This has come out of nowhere.  Desperately worried. He worried about the operation but we never really thought about afterwards.  Feel like every five mins my phone doesn’t ring is a bonus and the antibiotics get five minutes more to do their job.

  • Dear Ledslot

I am really sorry that I did not see this post yesterday when I was on the Forum, and to read that your husband has had these difficulties since having the surgery.

I cannot pretend to know what you are going through but I truly empathies with you as this must be a nightmare for you both. I do hope over the past three days that the progress has been positive.

    How are things?

  • Hi Loewdal…he,s still heavily sedated and on the ventilator…They did try reducing the sedation the other day but he was very agitated and was fighting everything..the breathing tube was still in place and I think he probably felt like he was choking..but not stable enough to remove it….He,s on his fourth type of antibiotic now…readings have been a bit more stable today so dare I hope we,ve turned a corner?….confirmed it,s double pneumonia…unusual I think after this op…the surgeon has said the operation went well and did an endoscopy yesterday in case there was a leak on the join but she said it all looked fine…one less thing to worry about…

  • I do hope that over the weekend ther have been some improvements further still.

I really hope too that you are coping ok, and have support around you at this time...

    Thinking of you both

  • Hi, I have only just come across this sight so only seeing your post. How is your husband now? I had the same surgery three years ago! I also had complications after my surgery where my lung collapsd but I pulled through, your husband is in good hands, the hospital has saved my life many times! Stay strong and be positive.

  • Hi Skin, he was due to have his operation today, but yesterday morning the surgeon phoned to tell us that the PCR test done 3 days previously had come back positive.  So we now have to wait a month.  We are gutted, but it does give him the chance to improve his fitness.  Thanks for your concern

  • Hi, waiting is the worst but remain positive and strong mindset keep the stress levels down, easier said than done I know. Worrying time but your not alone. Make sure he eats plenty of the right foods, avoid sugar and get vitamins into him.

  • Hi, how is your husband now, I replied to your post few days ago but don't think I replied properly, new to this site. Ask me anything, i will try help my best from what I went through, I had same surgery, it's a tough journey but it does get easier.

  • Hi Skin..thank you for your post…he,s now got a tracheotomy as they wanted him off the breathing tube through his mouth and didnt want him sedated for too long…they did that five days ago..he is not well awake yet…but does open his eyes on asking…tries to mouthe words but of course no voice with the trachy..so frustrating for him…he had two reasonably good days then yesterday his obs were all over the place…heart rate and BP very high…but the positive is his infection markers are coming down slowly …and he,s holding his own on the oxygen…I expect to have some bad days I guess as much as we dont want them..would like it to be all in the right direction…Its good to know you got through your bad spell and three years on, enjoying life I hope!

  • I am also a neck breather (laryngectomy), took panic attacks when I first came round thinking I couldn't breath, I was in hospital for two months, ICU for one month then the ward all due to complications, I had a leak, was unable to eat for about a year ( that was torture!! ) Still no voice as the consultant doesn't feel to confident that it will work giving the surgery I had but iv now got used to having no voice. It's a major op but remain positive.
