FACING END OF LIFE

So here we are 27 days after my post about the recurrence.

The cancer mets are not the only problem …… the hernia repair has not worked and Chris’s post op conduit is pretty much blocked by a loop of bowel. Nothing they can do. He can’t eat but after a fight a Ryles drain has been fitted to bypass the gastric system and he can get comfort from drinking. My beautiful man is skeletal and can barely move from a recliner. Talking is such hard work except to say how much he loves me and doesn’t want to leave. District nurses come every day to replace syringe driver and give any top up jabs day or night.
I can’t begin to describe the overwhelming sorrow and heartbreak I’m experiencing. It is often too much to bear. He is still fighting but it is futile.

  • Oh Gerry I’m so sorry to read this post ! My heart breaks for you both, glad to hear he’s home with you and you are getting support! Sending hugs xxx

  • I’ve had a bad day ….. don’t usually share a post like that but sadness has overwhelmed me today ….. reality hits I guess Broken heart

  • It’s good to have somewhere to be able to say your real feelings with people who understand as trying to put a brave face on is really hard ! So vent away xxx

  • Geraldine I am so sad to read this you both have been through so much. We are all here for you. Big hugs. Steph x

  • oh Christ Geraldine, so sorry to hear this, cant imagine what you are going through, writing on here late at night deffo helps, especially when the brain wont turn off.  our friends we met in the radiotherapy waiting room at the Churchill, have just gone through similar, he got through throat cancer, we did the meet up when we were all "better", a random cough, which wouldn’t shift, finally diagnosed the little sh*t had gone to the lungs.  She just lost him recently.  Its so bitter sweet, hes out of pain, but for everyone else its still going on.  Thank you for updating us, lots of us on here have followed so many journeys, we have always said wish we all lived nearer to each other to give that actual hug, but this family is here for you.  xxx

  • So sorry to hear that Chris is in the end stages of his battle against this terrible disease. Hope you can still find moments of happiness and contentment in whatever time you have left together and that his medical team are able to keep him comfortable and pain free.

  • Thank you CB. The last weeks have been hard and I have looked after Chris at home. He passed away this morning so the suffering is over … for him at least. Broken heart

Oh dear. I am very sorry to read that. I know what it's like, and I haven't got any good advice to offer you - other than to keep going.

At least you were there, and able to help him at the end. He will have known that, and valued it - so please take heart from it.

I send you love, and best wishes. All the very best.
