Update after 6 months temozolomide

Hi all,

It's been a while since I've updated on our situation and I know how useful I find reading other's experiences (good and bad) so here goes:

My wife has just finished her 6 months of temozolomide. It all went fairly smoothly. The last round had to be delayed 2 weeks as her platelets got a bit low (down to 87) but lots of leafy greens and the break got them back up to 101.

We have the dexamethasone down to 500mcg every other day. She still gets headaches if we withdraw all together but this is about as low a dose as possible so we're not worried about this being long term.

We met the oncologist on Friday to discuss next steps. The MRI is still showing no growth since last MRI but there is some enhancement that remains i.e. cancer cells. He's said we now go into a treatment break and have MRIs every 3-4 months and then if/when growth return we discuss second line chemo e.g. PCV.

So, this is as good as we could have hoped for last July when she was first diagnosed. It's still obviously a difficult situation as she has ongoing mobility and cognitive issues caused by the tumour but she's still hanging in there and fighting.

All the best to everyone,

Chris

  • Hi Chris

Glad to hear things are stable and the MRI was good news. Long may it continue. G remained stable for almost two years.

Sending you both a huge virtual hug and lots of positive energy. Stay strong.

  • Hey Chris,

Thank you for the update.  As you say, it is good to read people's stories and to know how they are getting on.

As you say, that all sounds like as good news as you could hope for.  Essentially, any damage that was done was done at the beginning and the treatment has done its thing so she is stabilised and just being observed.

I know from other posts that you are a really practical, positive man.  I'm really glad that your wife is fighting.  I'm really glad that she has you standing with her and helping to hold her up.

Are you able to draw a bit of breath now?  I hope you are able to get some plans in over the summer now that you've not got to work around chemo.  I recall constantly being on a high alert waiting for the hammer to fall - and I guess that is especially hard if your wife still has some impairment.  But over time in that observation phase, I found it easier to relax find a new normal.  I hope you can too.

Bless you mate... keep an eye on yourself.  It probably doesn't always feel like it, but let me tell you that you are doing an amazing job.

    Big hug...

    Pete
