Hi, I hope it is okay for me to join here. My Mum was diagnosed with bone cancer yesterday. It is in her breast bone, ribs, pelvis and spine. As yet she is in no pain. It was diagnosed through a CT scan and then a follow up PET scan after she had breast cancer surgery in December 2020. Mum is 74 and has a long history of cancer. Twelve years ago she had a massive operation at Christy’s which resulted in the removal of her gall bladder and spleen so her immunity is weak. The cancer was in her stomach lining then. Three years ago she was diagnosed with breast cancer which was successfully removed but it sadly returned in the other breast. As yet she hasn’t started any treatment. She got an infection after surgery which resulted in drug induced jaundice. She had been very poorly for three months with this and her body could not tolerate chemo. Radiotherapy was due to start yesterday but is now on hold after the discovery of bone cancer. We are awaiting an appointment with the oncologist now. Like a lot of you I guess I have looked online and it scares me so much. Has anyone else gone through anything similar? I feel so isolated in these Covid times. I have been signed off work to care for Mum as she wasn’t able to have her vaccine until a few days ago (liver damage due to jaundice a worry) I know I need to be strong for Mum. We lost my dad to a brain tumour ten years ago. He was in hospital for over two years so I’m finding this really hard. I hope I’m doing the right thing telling my experiences on here, I hope someone can offer some reassurance. Thank you for reading.

  • Hi and a warm welcome to the online community

I'm sorry to read what a long history your mum has with cancer and it must have taken a significant toll on you too.

I don't have the experiences to share with you that you're looking for but I noticed that your post hadn't had any response yet. You might like to take a look at this thread called positive secondary breast cancer stories. While it can't give you the reassurance you're asking for it does show that there are positive stories out there.

You might also like to join the carers only group which is a safe and supportive place to discuss your worries and emotions with others who are caring for someone living with cancer. If this is something you'd like to do then just click on the link I've created which will take you straight there.

It would be great if you could pop something about your mum's journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
