Waiting for MRI

Hi,

I was diagnosed last Thursday the day before I flew to  Prague for a long weekend with friends.

i had a great weekend and switched off not thinking about it!  Since I’ve come back reality has hit hard, one minute I’m ok and positive the next crying.

i am waiting for my MRI, it says it should be around 10 - 14 days. I’ve chased it up with my support nurse as it is now 7 days and she says it’s early days give it a bit longer.

How long did the rest of you wait before an appointment.

The waiting game is the hardest

i also haven’t really told anyone either as my children are at Uni and I want to tell them in person together, that won’t be until next week now.

  • Oh welcome Leocat2010,

Sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed as it is a rollercoaster of emotions for sure.  The beginning is so hard as just processing it all takes a lot out of you.  I was diagnosed in September 2021 and remember it so well.  I was so mad and angry as I didn’t want to deal with any of it.  I am an RN so had lots of questions.  All in all I did ok and although on hormone blockers for 2 more years I feel optimistic.

I remember waiting for my MRI and it was about a month as Covid precautions were in place.  The waiting is terrible.  I live in Florida but wait was long too.  Then they found something and called me back for MRI biopsy and couldn’t do it as my breasts are small and biopsy needle would have gone through my breast so had to have open surgery and it was stage 1 grade 2 but small.  Had DCIS in right breast.  That threw me for a loop and got pissed off all over again.
I am hoping you get your MRI done soon and results are good.  Take it easy and all the ladies on here have been great and oh so helpful .

  • Hi

Welcome to the group. It's great to have this forum, I was only diagnosed 3 weeks ago but it really helps to read other people's.posts and have questions on here.

I was told at my first appointment that it was 99% chance cancer just after they had done the biopsy so they knew before the biopsy results.  Due to this they ordered the MRI scan for the week after so that was pretty quick.

My lump is 3.5cm and grade 3 invasive ductal so I do wonder if it depends on the diagnosis??

One thing I have now been waiting 3 weeks for is the HER2 result. This is now delaying treatment but apparently the labs are really busy.

Hopefully you won't have to wait too much longer. Just try and keep your mind occupied with other things and keep busy...its the only way to stop thinking things you don't want to think.

  • Thank you for replying.

it must have been so frightening being diagnosed through Covid times!

i am so grateful for all the support there is out there.

Such a worrying time isn’t it!

  • Hi Andrea,

Yes, It’s so great to be able to have the support of this group. Thank you for replying.

Hopefully you will get the result very soon. The waiting is definitely the hardest part!

I am trying to keep myself busy but as you know the whole situation becomes overwhelming at times.

Take care and look after yourself.

  • Covid was a rough time all over and I was so tired of masking up.  I needed surgery on my right breast but my regular surgeon’s wife became ill so he took a leave.  Then the other surgeon got sick and was off for 2 more weeks.  I think he may have had Covid.  It was a hard time as I didn’t know my second surgeon.  I know my cortisol level had to be sky high.  Guess we get stronger every day.
I actually laughed after all my treatments were done as even though times were tough I had some laughs along the way.  Coping one way or another.

Support is so important and all of us here are here to help anyway we can.  Family and friends are so important too but our sisterhood really can give us hope.
If you get a chance there is a good podcast series on YouTube called Menopause and Cancer.  Great information and interviews with so many wonderful medical professionals.
Dr Liz O’Riordan is wonderful too.  She is also in YouTube.  Her story of breast cancer is amazing.

  • Hi - I had my MRI last night.
Next appointment on July 24th. Xx

  • Glad you've had the MRI Slight smile

I had my biopsies on 12 June and my MRI yesterday 27 June. It was supposed to be on 03 July which would have been 3 weeks later but there was a cancellation yesterday and I was lucky they offered it to me.

They told me they would send my results to the consultant.

I haven't got.a date to see the consultant about my results but they mentioned 2 weeks so I'm hoping w/c 07 July.

The consultant did say that depending on the MRI results I may need more scans/biopsies if they find anything else but I hope for us both and anyone else waiting that our MRIs are clear apart from the original one. Pray

From what people are saying on here, the process/timescales seem to be different depending on where people live as well as their diagnosis.

It feels like a lot of waiting but for me it's only been 2 weeks, then if I see the consultant w/c 08 July that will be 4 weeks.

I'll keep in touch about what's happening as we seem to be in the same place,

    Take care x

  • Hi

I’m finding the worst bit the waiting and the not knowing.

i have been diagnosed with High Grade Apocrine DCIS.
Nothing was really conclusive on the mammogram (M2) or ultrasound (U2) so I had a biopsy taken, as I have a lumpy area and nipple discharge. The biopsy confirmed the DCIS.

My MRI is to see if there’s any invasive cancer hidden / present  and to see the extent of the DCIS.
I have just under a 4 week wait until my next appointment, at least it’s booked!

I’m trying not to over think things, which is hard as I’m a real worrier. So worried about what the MRI will pick up!

Please keep in touch and let me know how your journey is going.

    Take Care.
